Never understood people qualifying them geniuses. Boring, trivial songs, chords and riffs heard ten thousand times before, and a lo-fi aesthetic which basically does nothing to serve the songs (don't get me wrong, I love lo-fi bands, but in the case of GBV I feel like it does not bring anything interesting to the songs, just a draft feeling to the songs. And while I can love some things which have a draft feeling, well, I feel like it just does not work for them). I've tried many times to get into them, and yeah, some songs are okay, I even quite like Bee Thousand, but overall a massively overrated band in my opinion.

they should appeal to me heavily, seeing as i have the attention span of the length of a GBV song, but they don't, really. i dunno.

STATIC AIRPLANE JIVE is actually a really good 7". They're not too bad in small doses, there are far worse bands. They probably just have far too many albums of half assed material. You could put all their best songs together and still have probably 7 or 8 great album's worth of material.

Yeah, this band is pretty decent, at least there is some decent songwriting and hooks. It's not some shit LIARS garbage.

I love pretty much the first half of the GBV discography. Sandbox through Alien Lanes is all stellar. Don't really care too much for Devil Between My Toes, and the stuff after Alien Lanes is kind of hit and miss. But those 7 albums there are winners through and through.
These are strange picks for these band massacre threads. I thought bands like Mars Volta or Smashing Pumpkins would get put out there right away. But I guess both of them have their assholes ripped plenty already.

I can't say anything bad about them. I'm on the tractor rape chain. (GBv equivalent of Bandwagon)

I really like Devil Between My Toes, but have heard other material of their's that I can't stand. Which of their other albums sounds most like DBMT?

Love GBV and anything Robert Pollard related. Some of their songs do feel kinda more like an idea of a melody and the fact they'll cram so many songs on a record hurts the flow (That really only applies to their later records), but most of the songs are so short it's really never an issue.
I think Under The Bushes, Under The Stars is one of the most genius records I've ever heard. They display more creativity and killer hooks and melodies on that album that most bands do in a lifetime, I think. ~Jeremy~

Pretty much all of their early stuff has the same vibe (from DBMT to SPTFGS) but I would say DBMT is pretty special, with all these instrumental tracks. Anyway, my favorite record from this era is Sandbox. Be sure to hear their very first EP too, Forever Since Breakfast.
