I made a thread about this before in which symbol man and others helped me choose a laptop. in the end i bought a hp hdx18'' 500gb hard drive, dual 2.53 processors, 4gb ram, blu ray and all that top shit. Twas only 700 quid off ebay! absolute deal. Ordered it off an american dealer. if anyone is thinking of getting a new laptop this is the beast to get. its pretty much top of the line in everything except its graphic card which is 512 not 1gb. otherwise its got great reviews everywhere and is pretty much the best cheapest one i could see. so anyway i made this thread because i'm waiting for it to arrive and want to ask the tech literate to advise me on stuff i need to download and do to make sure this laptop lasts a long ass time and doesn't get slowed down by viruses like my last one. And also what stuff i need to do to it to get it running at its best and what programmes are worthy downloading etc. i heard there are hard drive partition things i need to do for back up too?

that said, i've been on windows for years now with a free antivirus and have never been infected... at least, not that i was aware of i think if people had got really basic security reflexes, they probably wouldn't get so infected. A friend of mine created a phishing page once in order to see if people would fall into it. He created a simili facebook connect page, and then sent mails to his whole contact list about a new friend invitation; the mail was all lowercase, included loads of spelling mistakes and was sent from a "@gmail.com" address. Yet 15 people fell into it, including one whose password was the same for basically everything, including his paypal account... I mean come on, is it that hard to pay a bit of attention to what you're clicking on? Same with MSN viruses where someone sends you "pics from the last party ". I guess I could understand how they would work for native-English speakers, but I don't know how a French could download one of these... eh |

My experience with Windows is that my free antivirus software, itself, slows down my computer. What rare virus I do receive, however, are utterly beyond the capacity of the antivirus.

hmm i don't know. my old computer was very slow but then again it was really old. now i've got a laptop which I paid 450€ and it works perfectly fine. Then again I don't play games ; the most CPU-expensive activity I do is playing music, which doesn't require that much resources

I just got ubuntu. I'm half win7 and half ubuntu. So far there have been few complications. The only bitch I would have to say is finding/installing the proper drivers for your hardware. other than that, finding/installing programs aren't too bad. Wine helps too.

you know that it will be retained at customs and that you'll have to pay an import duty and the vat over the total cost, don't you?

strange, because it would be of their interest to do so, and it's an eu directive.
maybe you're confusing with goods imported from within the european union? |

But Ni'k, did you want to do video editing or was that someone else? I don't think linux and video edting (and low budget) go together. Yes, the ultra high end is on Unix but at the affordable level, not so much. There are a couple of packages out there but I haven't heard of anyone using 'em.

The fact it was the English who invented the computer and the World Wide Web really sticks in the graw of yanks, who like to believe they invented absolutely everything. Haha.
