I've been looking through the posts to see what Sonic Youth fans think of mgmt, and it seems pretty popular to say the are annoying, "not that original", "over hyped", or whatever.
The singles are catchy, and I like them, but the rest of the album is something entirely different. They're definitely my favorite new band in a very long time. They've got crazy dreamy/noisy synthesizers and inventive riffs and song structure. They've got awesome vocal harmonies and an amazingly tight, self contained, original sound. They are like some sort of neon rolling stones/pink floyd beast crossed with slagsmalsklubben and new order. I'm not gonna try to convince anyone, but I don't think they're over-rated at all. I've loved everything they've released so far, and I don't think it's fair to categorize them with vampire weekend and the ting tings and every other band that blows up for 5 seconds because of a phone commercial. If you've just heard the singles, it's really worthwhile to give the album a shot. Check out "Of moons, birds and monsters", "future reflections", or "Weekend Wars". Check out "Metanoia" if you've got an extra 12 minutes and you want to hear someone switch flawlessly from Marc Bolan to Axl Rose. If you've already heard the album, I'd be curious to know what you hate about it. If you've only heard the singles, I wouldn't pass judgement based on that. Although I like them, they don't represent the scope of the band at all.

Upon the evidence of three youtube videos: The look of their videos is unbearable. The songs are alright. Will look forward to their second or third album, when I'll actually get round to listening to them properly. Does anyone else do that? Wait until they've got a bit of experience behind them? Does that make me a prick?

Which three youtube videos? I like their older low budget videos, but don't really care either way for the new ones.

I only liked the first song I heard by them. The other ones were bland. Even live performances of the one song I liked on late-night talk shows were pretty lackluster.

I don't like the album because, if you except "Kids" that is alright for me, all the other tracks sound boring in my opinion... I can't even see anything catchy or whatever in them. Same for Fleet Foxes, by the way.
And I have absolutely no problem with hype things (I really enjoyed the High Places album) |

I heard MGMT for the first time the other day. I was pretty indifferent. And in a way SYRFox's comparison to Fleet Foxes is quite apt. The two bands are stylistically miles apart, but yeah... again... "indifferent." Didnt hate it, but it certainly didn't excite me.

Yeah, don't waste your time on this band. Go listen to Kids of Whidney High or something.

Wow. Most of these complaints feel like I'm listening to a completely different band. I guess there's something there that I am into that other people actually don't like. Maybe it sounds like some things I like about music and some things I wish were done right in music that are often done wrong but this time are done right. Maybe a big part of my appreciation for them is that they're filling personal holes of disappointment with music that others don't particularly need filled.

the one song is a decent-good pop song, but nothing to get super excited over

I don't hate them, they're just very bland to me. That one song where they dance around half-naked on the beach is kind of catchy I suppose. The Electric Eel one where they dance around half-naked in the jungle is pretty much just annoying though.
Besides, I'm not a very big fan of synth pop. The only two modern/current acts that have caught my attention and I have actually enjoyed, who focus heavily on synths, organs, etc.... are Mates of State and Santogold. They make good (occasionally diverse) pop music. MGMT are really dull next to those two bands, imo. |

They are wholly unappealing to me but thats cool that you enjoy them on your own terms, and welcome criticism as a means to refine your tastes and get the most out of what you hear.
