I always thought that stoner is generic and boring rock-music. I downloaded Fu Manchu's King Of The Road and it is generic and a bit boring but man does it kick ass! Perfect music to get drunk to or for driving (not drinkdriving).
What are bands that are worth to check out? I know some like Kyuss and early QOTSA (i was gonna type 'gotsa' which isn't far from goatse haha). Corrosion of Conformity maybe? Discuss about stoner-rock/metal. |

there is no such thing as stoner rock, stoner metal.
stoneres like anything heavy, riffing, simple or complex, meloic or droney, etc. there is no stoner music. to me the ultimate to listen to while high is sometimes miles davis sketches of spain.

Boris has done some cool stoner rock-styled music...

Be careful with Boris though. I mean, it is all great, but if you are going to the record store with enough cash for one record and you have your heart set on some stoner rock, don't just grab a random Boris record, because they aren't all the same; you may end up with something that is, while a great record and still not a waste of money, not stoner rock.
Heavy Rocks is a good stoner rock Boris album.

I second the Boris warning, some of it is not stoner riffs, and more toward free form skronk noise.

But it should be noted once again that it is all good. You sill still pick up something good if you by some Boris. Just not necessarily stoner rock, that's all.

Although it came out slightly before the term 'Stoner Rock' was coined, Monster Magnet's 'Spine of God' album, and in particular the track 'Nod Scene', is a bit of a genre classic (if only for including 'that' riff, and the line "think I wet my pants doing whippets.")

If he wants to get high, maybe. But I get the feeling he is look specifically for this music, not just something to get high too. I know a lot of people who don't smoke who like stoner rock. I know one guy who plays stoner rock, and is sort of embarassed that it's called that. Whenever he talks about his music he says "It's kind of like Fu Manchu and Kyuss..." and people always say "Oh, stoner rock?" It sort of bums him out a little, but he just loves the music.

Yeah. There was a bit of a deal about that on stonerrock.com. they had a poll trying to find a name that wouldn't exclude non-smokers. 'Desert Rock' seemed like a pretty popular alternative for a while, although I think the amount of fans that actually live in the desert is even less than those that don't smoke. |

Ha, yeah, I remember hearing the term desert rock for a while. Didn't have to do with Kyuss being from Palm Desert or something?

Yeah, I think so. and that whole 'Desert Sessions' thing. The funny thing is that most people agree that Sabbath sort of started the whole thing - and if there's one band i don't associate with deserts it's them.

My favorite stoner rock is Kyuss.
But my favorite thing to get stoned to is probably stuff like Boredoms or Acid Mothers Temple. |
