never lived in one but i have visited many. they all seem to be kind of the same in many ways. ones in berlin are mainly made up of punker types with the odd one with artists etc. i could never live in one.

plus all the people i've met who live in squats look like the only wash their hands once a week, at most, i can't be doing with that.

I know a couple of artists who at times have lived in squats and they always seem clean, still the hygiene thing is what always put me off. No hot water or mod cons would irritate me no end.

there are some places that were squats and still think they are but pay rent and bills and all that kind of stuff. those places tend to be more hygenic.

i went to one in berlin and the way to get into it was climbing through a drain cover and crouching down into a tunnel, essentially a sewer. they had a good ping pong table though.

here they'd send the swat teams to get you out-- there are no laws that protect squatters that i'm aware of

I've read somewhere of a house in Leyton that has been modernised by the squatters and they live there without paying the rent etc. I still think it's not fair for them not to pay council tax etc. I don't know if it's still on there, but in Kentish Town there used to be a big writing on a wall that said ''800.000 Empty Homes in Britain'' or something along those lines.

Stayed in one for about a week, yes.

It was a prerequisite for suburban wanna-be hardcore punks that wanted to think they were a part of the Lower East Side scene. I had fun in the 80's.
