On Candle, Thurston sings "Gotta change my mind before it burns out." This is similar to the concept of a screen saver. A screen saver changes the image on a computer screen so it doesn't burn out. Is it possible that Thurston knew what a screen saver was back in 1988? Maybe, but I doubt it. I'm not even sure if screen savers existed back then.I think Thurston was just really ahead of his time!

Actually, I think there were some screen savers in '88 though not very fancy ones since color monitors were close to non-existent. I doubt Thurston was doing much computing at that point, and while he had worked in a Kinko's type copy shop, it was well before then. I worked at Kinko's in '90 and we had plenty of mac stations with 1st gen macs with screen savers, so you never know.
You definitely deserve credit for the oddest thread title of the year regardless. I was figuring there would be some sort of submarine connection. |

it takes more than predicting screensavers to make Thurston even close to being Jules Verne I'm afraid.

It's indeed baffling. For Magic Wheel Memory to remark on perhaps the Sonic Youth lyric that is most pregnant with poetic philosophical meaning and come up with that is a bona fide head-scratcher to be sure. |

Perhaps you're right, but I'll bet Thurston would kick Jules' ass in a fight. Heck, even if Jules Verne were still alive and in his physical prime, I would take that bet.

Well, Thurston could step on most anyone and probably kill them by means of "squash".
