I've always got along well with Sonar 6.

Apple users tend to endorse the classical GarageBand.

I'm a fan of Sonar, I've used version 2 and 4. I liked them both.

reason 3 for for sequencing
live 5 for live
digital performer 5 for multitracking, sequencing

and garage band is a piece of shit, it uses more processor power than protools and digital performer and reason and any thing else i use. and to top it off it is absolute garbage.

I'm trying to get to grips with Ableton Live 6.
It's been recommended to me, but doesn't seem that intuitive to use.

Dude, how the hell do I record using Fruity Loops?? I want to be able to just click record on another program and switch back and forth between 3 or 4 different loops/pieces on FL to create a "song." Is that possible??

I don't think so.

I just work it out the most primitive way, that I create some layer track in Fruity Loops, then keep it playing, switch to a different program for recording audio (Audition or something like that) and just record it live play-by-play.

Stone-age recording method, yet good for capturing the "live" feeling of recording session.

That's almost the same way that I record with virtually any program. You're also spot on about the sound being more 'live' or indeed more vulnerable to being made to sound as such that way (you are playing while you record, after all). Generally I use Cool Edit Pro for filtering the results and trying out different effects, Sound Forge is particularly good for equalizing and amplifying a track, but it's also the program that gives me the most space for mixing, looping etc. It is also good for plugging in different equipment and record. Say, the sound that comes out of a dictaphone translates better in terms of recording with Sound Forge, rather than Cool Edit Pro or All Sound Recorder. Sound Sound Sound.

...

you can TOTALLY record live by recording on one program then switching between loops on fruity loops. it'll sound messy and silly perhaps but if you know anything about editing you can make it sound like a gem. i do it all the time.

you may as well use an analog 4 track using that method for recording.
