I want to know what are your problems with it. I am not defending it 100% but I am saying that it isn't all that bad. Just that unchecked Capitalism is bad, the way it is now.

There's nothing wrong with Capitalism
There's nothing wrong with free enterprise Don't try to make me feel guilty I'm so tired of hearing you cry personally, I distrust any school of thought that promotes greed and impatience as virtues and modesty and compassion as vices. but I'm old school like that. |

I think its the tendency of capital to get concentrated and the amoralistic power that it engenders that is bad. One of the great things about NYC has always been the 1000's of small independent stores. Lately Manhattan is getting more and more sanitized with every store being part of a chain. In midtown the classic NY deli is nearly extinct, its all one chain called Pax/Europa/City Deli with their $8 premade sandwiches. I mean, I ordered a pastrami and swiss last week and nearly got into an arguement with the guy cuz they served it cold. "You have to ask for a hot pastrami". WHAT!!I"m in NYC!!! Hot pastrami or corned beef is the default! Its supposed to be in a steam table.
One of the more brilliant achievements of western capitalism is our banking system that lends out the same money 7 times (I think thats the current restriction), of course that also has risk. It is one of the reason the West has been able to to move ahead of other societies. not everyone thinks this is great. Your dollar(pound/euro/etc is a vote. If you want to vote for Bush, you go to Dunkin Donuts (owned by the Carlyle Group). If you want to vote for NYC, you go to Porto Rican coffee traders. |

Well said. My problem with Capitalism is that its virtues are the opposite of what is considered good outside of economics. That and the endless consumption of resources it relies on is taking us towards environmental disaster. And please people, don't treat socialism as if it's synonomus with Communism. |

there seems to be a lot of confusion about the two, both on this forum and in the real world. They are not the same thing. |

capitalism has become a dangerous and disturbing personal and social economic system that is slowly destroying the world by means of war, destruction of the environment and natural resources, economic slavery, famine, economic collapse and a neglection of human values due to the unmitigated avarice of a select few.

hold your horses... look, all that shit existed before capitalism. in fact, capitalism has mitigated some of those. regarding "unchecked" capitalism, i think money should not be the supreme value in a civil society. i like free markets, but i do believe there should be some restrictions to them-- slavery, child trafficking, and macjobs come to mind. anyway i can't stay long and get involved in long arguments today. i thought i'd just jump in and throw my soundbyte into the fray. "if it doesn't fit, you must acquit" hmm... no?? |

Once the money gets a higher priority than the people, we know we have a problem.
