If I saw that commerical late at night, I'd have to go to bed, because I'd think I was having a waking dream.
Their logo has an upside down cross in it...

they got you hooked.
enjoy being assraped by the copro marketing muchine. they got sunn O))) and Merzbow, what next? prurient selling frosted flakes? You will see. it is all co-opted. 30 years ago no one would have believed it if you told them the stooges and the Ramones would be ubiquitous commercial music, but they are now. enjoy selling thjem yr souls for some stupid fucking jeans./

I don't see how that could work. The music is too ambient and abstract for your average person to think that someone puts out records of that sort of thing.
I strongly doubt harsh noise could ever be co-opted by the mainstream, because it's just too hard to listen to for many people. Not only that, but it's so unusual that the music would draw attention away from the product. "Lust For Life" (Carnival Cruises) and "Blitzkrieg Bop" (I think it was AT&T) worked because they're fairly upbeat, catchy songs.

Right.
The music in that ad isn't really much different than a lot of movie/game soundtrack albums (see: the films of David Lynch... see Silent Hill soundtracks... etc). People are aware of those sounds already, and I highly doubt it's really going to become some new trend because of some obscure Swedish Jeans commercial with a drone and some weird piano knocking around. It's not even really representative of Merzbow or Sunn's overall sound, either. I wonder if Sunn or Merzbow sell any records because of this ad? (probably not) Also, Merzbow existed 30 years ago, with those punk bands you mentioned, Rob... Just sayin'. This commercial isn't going to change shit. Still pretty cool though. |

most people who hear songs on commercials assume they were written for the commercials, unless they ahve already heard the song. I have run into several peopl;e who had no idea lust for life was not a jingle written for carnival cruise lines.

Honestly, if I needed the money real bad I wouldn't be averse to doing that sort of thing. It'd depend on the kind of commercial, though.

Music on an album is just a long advertisement for the manufacturers of the plastic used to make cd's (also an advertisement tool for the people who print up the booklets and make cases).

I love knowing that whatever associations are made in people's heads as a result of the art of their music will now be forever tainted by the image of a shiny volkswagen 4 wheel drive vehicle, or a new style of underwear! yay!
it fucking SUCKS and I hate it.
