I think it's not too good for someone my age. I can't hear that "mosquito ringtone" (high pitched noise only young people can hear, so students use them for their phones in class so they won't get in trouble).
My hearing seems to be quite sensitive - I don't listen to my iPod at high volumes like other people my age do. My ears will hurt when someone passes me an earphone when they're listening to music on the highest volume, and they won't understand that I don't enjoy the music. I think they listen to their music really loudly, not because their hearing is not sensitive, but because they're trying to look cool. At concerts, I will flinch along with the drum beat. I found The Scientists painfully loud.

I've tried to wear ear plugs regularly this past weekend at the Roadburn festival. It went pretty well for the most part, but everytime when a band played that I was really into (Acid Mothers Guru, Wolves in the Throne Room, Church of Misery, etc) I threw them out immediately. I plan on wearing them more often from now on though.

I thought it was damaged by the numerous concerts I went to as I have trouble following conversations sometimes but when I got it tested a few months ago it was actually normal for my age. So I realized I just had a concentration problem (caused by my constant daydreaming).

I remember Atari Teenage Riot as being lots louder than Merzbow was - I wonder if my hearing has deteriorated since then... Haino in Newcastle was probably the loudest thing I've seen, it was absolutely absurd. But then there's a lot more dynamic sounds in Haino. As I've said, Merzbow was a big doughy nougat of sound. EDIT: I'll add that probably the most intense sound I ever heard was a Kaija Saariaho concert at the Royal Albert Hall, although seeing a sextet version of Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht last year was pretty amazing as well. Intense in the sense of being unable to breathe and wanting to collapse. Just to be clear.

My ears rang for two days after seeing Dinosaur Jr for the first time.
I haven't noticed any loss of hearing. |

After seeing My Bloody Valentine in 1990, my ears rang with high-pitched sounds for the next 3 days. That's about as much as they've suffered from in a live environment. Many years of listening to loud music hasn't done my ears many favours, though.

what did you make of the nihilist spasm band, jon boy?
saw them last night for the second time and they really blew me away, despite of them missing their main vocalist. |

I've definitely lost some hearing, and I think loud music is part, or most, of the reason. Protect your ears! I've also heard (no pun intended) that you should never remove the wax from your ears. Supposedly, it's there for protection.

Huh?
No seriously, my hearing is perfect, which is pretty incredible seein that I've seen Sonic Youth close to 30 times, including the Bad Moon Rising tour when I burried my head in Thurston's monitor, plus everyone from Big Black to Painkiller (they were the absolute loudest thing ever). I'm just lucky I guess. |
