It wasn't really grunge though.... The pod is okay, the other songs on that album are waaay better. like Stars. They've got a very pumpkinesque sound but i like them more.

Hum fucking rule. I bought "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" many many years ago for $3 at a pawn shop.. it was good enough, especially the first song, but the sound of it kinda got tiring (too drifty and Abercrombie&Fitch-core at times, though the effects were great). However, I decided to download "Downward is Heavenward" and I realized that not only was it one of the best albums of all time, but I hadn't paid close enough attention to the genius of "Astronaut". So, yeah, those two albums are amazing, I know they have a few other things, but I'd reccomend everyone get "Downward". Another killer first song (the time changes on that are hard to follow and the way the guitar overdubs slink in and out are insane -- you'll know exactly what I'm talking about when you hear it!). Huge effects-heavy walls of guitar with beautiful lyrics and soft melodic vocals. Great. One of a kind. Space-rock and whatnot.

Oh, and I hate "Stars", I think that's their worst song, I remember... some band covering it.. I can't remember who (Evergreen Terrace?)...
And this band sounds NOTHING like grunge.. it's spacerock with shoegaze overtones. |

I haven't pulled out that record in at least a decade.
I wonder how it's held up. |

Hum is awesome. Electra 2000 is a sweet album, as are the rest of them. Everything they did was good.
The post-Hum bands are worth checking out as well, Centaur and National Skyline. |

hum don't sound like grunge or rush!
i guess if i were to equate the sound to someone, it'd be .. a toned-down spacemen 3 that wasn't on drugs but actually went to space with your typical indie guy singing over layers and layers of effects and distortion walls. perfectly acceptable pop music. it has that quality i like in swervedriver's music.. the kind of odd transcendent parts where it feels like everything in life is okay.. just be a lyric... and i usually don't pay attention to lyrics but yeah... "She's out back counting stars" okay, so this song is amazing. |

Hum is one a the best bands ever. Atsonic is right "Downward" is a great, great album. The lyrics are just wonderful, just spacey enough "my dreamboat living on a submarine/she packs a second set of tanks/and all I ever want and need" And beyond the lyrics the guitar work is just amazing if you listening to the left channel closely on both albums. This guy throughs in little bends everywhere he can, the live stuff is wild with this guy. Never, never, ever ever ever ever, get tired of Hum, ok?
