There is no secret. I just know that if they want to tour with a new album next summer they better start working now. I'm afraid that if they start later it will end up sounding like Rather Ripped.

I see, maybe they are doing in secret, and recording on the bus, or places they have time to rest in.

I don't care what direction they go, just as long as it is good. I've yet to be dissapointed by any major realease they have done.

I hope that playing the DDN gigs will somehow effect the next album. Maybe they will recall the importance of recording the album together at the same time.

Yeah, I think in that aspect they have been influenced to go another way, if they are or think about making the next record.

it's kind of weird to think that they wouldn't prefer to go multitrack, if you ask me. |

i'd say they've had their hands full w/ the daydream reconstruction. their usual schedule seems to be debuting new material in the fall, around october/november, which is when they usually begin recording (i think). depending on how things go, we might even see a break in the clockwork schedule SY have maintained since roughly 1998/'a thousand leaves'...
they've also had an incredibly busy year...the starbucks tune may be the only thing they've had time to do. and the dylan tune, i guess. shit, what do i know? i wouldn't blame em if they took a break, though.

I'm hoping they keep with the basic schedule they've had for nearly ten years, an album every two years! Really, I just REALLY want to see them play again!!! I wouldn't blame them for taking a break, of course, but I mean... I WANT TO SEE AND HEAR NEW STUFF! hehehe

I don't mind multitrack. I just think that they should spend more time on the album and more time jamming together. Kim: "We started last summer working on some songs here [in Western Massachusetts] in our basement," says Gordon. "Then in the fall, everyone was really busy, so we actually didn't get back together until late November or early December." "Because our daughters have school and it's just such a hassle going down to New York all the time, we can really only go on the weekends, we kind of ... Steve came up here and worked out stuff for the second half of the record" she continues. "Then basically, Lee just figured out his parts later, in overdubs. So kind of by December we had started recording, or January." http://www.popmatters.com/music/inte...h-060612.shtml I wish i didn't read that part in the interview because I think it kind of ruined RR for me. In my imagination SY were sitting together for weeks making some sonic landscapes and out of that the songs appeared. |

interesting quote, moshe!
this is probably not so interesting, but in the interest of not being a downer, i just realized that SY have actually been on virtually the same schedule for TWENTY years, since 'daydream' in '88. the goo material showed up in mid-late '89. goo came in summer '90. dirty material started to pop up in summer '91. dirty came out in summer '92. jet set material was half the set by the time summer '93 rolled around. jet set came out in early '94. now, the schedule becomes displaced by kim's pregnancy, i suppose. thurston made 'psychic hearts' in '94, toured a bit, and SY barely played. however, 'washing machine' material was premiered and recorded in early '95, they toured w/ REM, lollapalooza, and the album came out in september '95... new material (the SYR instrumentals + early 'leaves' stuff) didn't surface until early '97, but after a thousand leaves came out in early '98, they've maintained basically the same schedule as they had prior to washing machine. so, will there be new material in the fall live sets and a new album in spring '08? i guess only time will tell...

That would be nice. And as for Starbucks and Dylan, they could do those during an album session.
