Alright, this time last year I didn't like any metal, mainly because I hadn't heard any good metal. Now its a pretty big part of the music I've been buying recently. Jesu, Khanate and High on Fire released some of my favourite albums last year..
As a Sonic Youth fan its not that much of a jump to Neurosis, Isis, Godflesh or my favourite Australian band The Grey Daturas. Anyone else have any thoughs? (some) Metal is really rad, you should check it out.

Nice, I love Jesu, Khanate and Isis.
If you really like Khanate, you should check out these bands: WRAITHS Sunn 0))) Goatsnake Boris I barely like any heavy stuff myself, but the ones I like are usually amazing. |

I wasn't particularly excited by the Neurosis that I've heard, but I have fallen for Pelican in a big way.
I'm wondering about Isis too, but there seems to be so many releases that I don't know where to begin.

add Earth and burning witch to those bands for khanate lovers
I used to be huge into slayer, sepultura, pantera, sabbath etc, still listen to sabbath but not as much as i used to. Sepultura's 'chaos AD' is a great album regardless of if you like metal or not |

get OCEANIC, that's there little baby monster. panopticon is cool but a little tamer, and the stuff pre oceanic (celestial, sgnl>5, red sea, etc.) it's heavier and more in the neurosis vein of doom. oceanic is when they started to add the instrumental dynamics (and that's, arguably, pelican's biggest inspiration) |

I like only stoner/doom metal. The rest bores me to death.

a lot of black metal isn't that far from punk/indie/whatever; for example, i'd recommend Haemoth & Blut Aus Nord to fans of Big Black, Unsane & Sonic Youth, and Velvet Cacoon aren't a million miles away from stuff like My Bloody Valentine and shoegaze type things. Anaal Nathrakh I'd recommend to fans of Big Black or Swans. Stuff like Darkthrone i'd recommend to anyone who likes hardcore. Leviathan I'd recommend to anyone who likes musical experimentation and stylistic open-mindedness. Etc.. |

For some reason only early 90's black metal gets to me... DarkThrone, Old Man's Child, Ancient, Emperor, Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir, Mayhem.....

All you metal fans seriously need to check out Zebulon Pike.
"Zebulon Pike is doom-laden instrumental stoner metal, and the soundtrack to the slow motion apocalypse. Embrace the sad wings of destiny..." I saw them recently and they blew my fucking mind! I've seen lots of shows so that's saying alot. A couple of their songs they played were around 30 minutes, and they rarely repeated any parts! It just a constant bombardment of heavy riffs, dual lead licks and broken music box-like quiet sections. I can't even begin to understand how they write their songs, let alone play them live. Also, Savage Clone likes them, so they have some kind of random seal of approval for that. http://www.zebulonpike.com |

MY favourite stoner metal album of all time has to be Sleep- Jerusalem/Dopthrone. One 50minute plus track about the weedians journey to the riff-filled land. Total radness, I recommend everybody checks it out.
Other favourite metal albums of mine include: Electric Wizard- Dopethrone (another awesome doom./stoner band, actually the first metal album i ever bought) Isis- Celestial(heaviest Isis album, I especially love the song Deconstructing Towers) Black Boned Angel- Supereclipse(Birchville Cat Motel's doom/drone project, the first song sucks but the next are awesome) Mastodon- Leviathan (probably the first non-doom metal bands I liked) High on Fire- Surrounded By Theives (Matt Pike from Sleep plus a guy from the Melvins on Bass and some dude on drums playing motorhead meets slayer biker style metal. Its better than i just described) Boris- Pink (its raddddddddddd, trust me. Actually all their stuff i've heard is awesome) Whitehorse- Caverns (kind of like khanate, from Melbourne Australia) Grey Daturas- Dead in the Woods (another great Aussie band, actually a really good starting point for metal. Sonic Youth meets Isis meets Sleep.)
