They finally admitted to many master tapes being lost. After initially discrediting the weight of the Times report, UMG’s court document reveals that some original master recordings lost in the fire lack replacement copies, including those of Sonic Youth and Les Paul.Have any of you heard any of the SY comment on this? maybe it was only the master tapes for EJST&NS, in which case, good riddance!

My apologies for not reading the page first.
Anyway, good news that it's not the studio tapes. Now there's definitely no excuse for them not being done. Any news on them Lee?
