after that they made her an outcast. anyway, she was right all along etc. not to say she didn't have problems, but those problems didn't disqualify her. i have 3 dead friends with bipolar, and i miss them. |

Of course I didn't just find out; I watched it on the news the day after it happened. But I had forgotten (or maybe never knew, I admit) that Madonna, of all people, had condemned O'Connor for it. This was the era of Madonna's "Justify My Love" video, her Sex book, and her unwatchable softcore movie with Willem Dafoe, and she was worried about ultraconservative Pope JP2? Jesus Christ (indeed)... And yes, Sinéad was right. She was right and EVERYBODY ELSE was wrong. ETA: And FUCK the boomers who gave her shit at that Bobfest in '92. Ironically, the same kind of people who gave Dylan shit during the '66 tour ("Judas!").

yeah, madonna of all people, your favorite mafia acolyte frank sinatra (not mine), and many others.
as an ex-catholic i was fucking gleeful, but i also understand that not everyone will see that symbol as the same symbol. not everyone is irish after all (although many want to). anyway this was not just any pope, but the polish pope who "defeated communism" and toured the world and purportedly liked skiing and other shit. kinda like a beardless santy kloss (for people who need a santy kloss in their lives). this happened way before the sex abuse reached global public consciousness around the turn of the century. but anyway, yeah. fucking normals, lol. https://www.grunge.com/986575/frank-...inead-oconnor/ (we've argued about sinatra before lol, i never liked the fucker, now you can join the haters club hahahaha) anyway all this reminds me of the columbus day episode of the sopranos... columbus! discoverer? genocider? alcoholic? messiah? |

The best part was that Furio, the one guy who was actually Italian, hated Columbus for being from northern Italy...

Nothing Compares 2U makes me vomit.
She had so many better songs, especially on her first two albums. This was always my favourite:Damn Your Eyes. It's also a cover, from Etta James I think and a B-side of Three Babies of of her second album. I used to have it on 12", also had a brilliant live version of Troy.
