Ive never been to New York, but one of the things that puts me off (apart from the fact i cant afford it) is the way its fetishised in adverts and stuff, its almost like the place is a tool with which to sell things. Whats you reckon?

well midtown is, and some of downtown in the wall street area
best bet is to ignore mainstream depictions of the city, it's a good idea to check out portrails of certain neighborhoods like the East Village with a strong boheimian past and much more fruitful then anything that Times Square can offer |

Like London hasn't been fetishized to death in the same way? Or Paris? |

It's kinda strange how many movies are set in Manhattan.

not at all, Manhattan has a population of over 1mil, and when you add the people who come into the city, it grows exponentially but not only that, each neighborhood is like it's own city really, there are over 50 distict neighborhoods in Manhattan alone |

But think about how many disaster movies are set in manhattan too. and blockbuster movies, it would be nice to see some set in another part of america for a change.

im not saying anything about those two places. Seeing as Sonic Youth are from New York, i feel that it is more relevent to this particular domain than London or Paris or anywhere else |

Well, yes, it is used to market things coming out of that city, but my point was that I don't really see this happening with NYC any more than it happens with any other huge city known for being a center of style/fashion/music/art etc.

relative to other large places, no you are correct. My point is i find New York is the place that is used more than any other place in America, and seeing as we are on a Sonic Youth messageboard, New York is more relevant than any other place.

Thought about that too (Paris, Texas)...promise.
but didn't write it. I used to watch that one a bunch. Outstanding performances....brilliant storytelling and realism...cinematography...my favorite Winders anyway. |
