Sunburned Hand of the Man are a band that I will travel to see live, they put on a thoroughly enjoyable show, but they don't really make sense to me on record (sorry, Unlurker!).
Jesu, on the other hand, have previously bored me senseless live (as I've mentioned in another thread), but I'll buy their music without even thinking about it and will love listening to it. Over to you now... |

I have to say LOW, love them on record, but the live I saw wasn't that good... I think the venue, the timing (open air stage, before sunset) and the main act (fu*kin' amazing Radiohead live set) all concurred to make their concert less enjoyable for me, but the ones that seemed to enjoy the less the event were themselves. Gotta catch them at a club gig.

Mono were shit live but are brilliant on record.
Agaskodo Teliverdek were hillarious live but the record sucked. Oren Ambarchi is awesome live as well as on the records. Vladislav Delay made me slumber during his gig, but his LPs are wonderful. Mary Timony was charming live, but I just don't get the records. NNCK sucked both live AND on the records.

I loved Racebannon live but have yet to hear a listenable record of theirs.
I actually saw Joan of Arc live, and it was one of the worst things I've ever seen. Some of their records are really interesting and weird though I'd rather listen to Cap'n Jazz. I'm seeing Polysics live soon, I'm taking a wild guess they'll be just as good live as on record. |

The Ex are AMAZING live (truly, the best band I've seen play live), but it's a shame their albums don't translate the energy they release on stage.

Saw Autechre "live" and it was really fucking boring, but I still love their records.
Now that Green River is no more (and I doubt the reunion tour will count), I do enjoy listening to the old Sub Pop records for nostalgia, but they don't really come anywhere near the intensity of what they were like on stage in '85. I wouldn't give the albums the time of day back then because of it. I saw the Fabulous Wailers play with Girl Trouble a few years ago and was somewhat shocked to find that they weren't playing like a nostalgia act at all. They tore it up like nobody's business. I seriously doubt if they recorded a new record of that same set that it would translate though. |

I saw this band called 4walls (Phil Minton, Luc Ex and two other guys) live 2 times and it undoubtly blew my mind. Just incredible, packed with tons of energy, pure fucking hardcore. On one of the gigs I bought their CD and, compared to the concert experience, I found it slightly dissapointing.

I own one grateful dead record, and 40 or 50 live recordings and videos. They are by far, a live band, and their sound does not translate well in the studio. In fact, if you have never heard live dead, then you really haven't heard the dead at all.... and by the way, ratdog still has it and is bringing it solidly into the 21st century...
record only band= any hip hop. I just dont understand live hip hop, unless its like the black Elvis or e-40...
