I'd go with Under the Bushes Under the Stars, I love that album. Propeller is pretty good so is King Shit and The Golden Boys. Then you could go ahead and listen to their later, non lo-fi stuff if you're so inclined. Mag Earwhig, Isolation Drills, Earthquake Glue, etc... They aren't perfect, but there's good (and catchy) songs on all.
Robert Pollard's solo stuff is kinda hit and miss. The guy puts out soooo much stuff that sometimes you've gotta wade through the crap to find the real gems. I really liked From a Compound Eye, that's not a bad place to start with his solo material. Robert Pollard is Off To Business was decent too. It's really straight forward, but not bad. Pollard's new band (Boston Spaceships) just put out their first album, which I haven't yet heard. |

the Brown Subs record is pretty decent.
you started w/ the best, imo. toilet and bowels' picks are very solid. some of the best stuff they ever did was on those 7" records from '92-'96...awesome stuff.

No! GBV works when you listen to their albums in one go. NO OTHER WAY

ok.
in my defence it was something like £3 and i wanted to check them out. There's lots and lots of music i need and to be honest, they were quite low on the list. I dont own any Joy Division for instance. Or Neil Young. I've only got Talking Heads Best Of too. I've got lots and lots to get (which is a good thing, in a way) |

Bee Thousand is awesome, I dunno why I've not listened to any of their other albums yet. I have loads on my HD too.

This thread inspired me to listen to GBV all day today. God damn, sometimes I forget just how much I love this band! I'm gonna go pick up that Boston Spaceships album soon.

Under the Bushes Under the Stars took me so long to get into. If the production was more like Alien Lanes, then it'd probably be their best.
Other than that, Bee Thousand is. It's my favourite album ever. |

It's on some kind of lost treasures tape or some shit, I can't remember to be honest with you even though I could look it up.
EDIT: fuck it I looked it up anyways. It's the Suitcase 2 tapes. The tracks "Your Charming Proposal" , "Home By Ten" , and "Paper Girl" are all sick songs. My three fav guided by voices songs actually. My band got to play a GBV tribute show in cinci one time, and Pollard was there right next to the stage getting wasted in the booth. it was sweet. played 2 of those songs. I'd really recommend those songs above though, kind of rare songs. |
