I tried to pick artistes who are well known, but aren't praised to the rafters every day on the forum.

The Frankie one is a classic, as is the Costello track. They'd be 2 and 3 on my list...
..behind "War Ensemble" by Slayer. I'm not a Slayer fan, but that LP ("Seasons in the Abyss", I think) is excellent.

I remember all of the various 12" mixes of "Two Tribes" that were released at the time. Some of them were splendid. ZTT at that time had a remarkable roster and an incredibly inventive team.

That, and Eric B and Rakim, should have been included. But it's the old ten-option limit, you see. It's the pollmaker's curse.

Well of course I went with Elvis Costello. I was just listening to Get Happy!!! before I got online as a matter of fact.
Though I would say EC has better songs on the subject of war...Pills and Soap comes to mind. |

It has to be Bud Flanagan with the Dad's Army theme for me, for nostalgia reasons really, followed by Frankie. I used to get woken every morning by the sound of an air raid siren when my neighbour blasted out the 12" version each morning.

I've picked the Motorhead one, as it's a stunningly good song, and totally unmotorheadlike, but I would also like to nominate:
Masters of War - Bob Dylan (I particularly like Mark Arm's version) And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda - Eric Bogle (I particularly like The Pogues' version) Green Fields of France - Eric Bogle (I particularly like The Men They Couldn't Hang's version) EDIT - Wow, I just googled Eric Bogle, and I had never realised that he was a fairly contemporary artist (okay, 1960's). I had always assumed that his songs were written during the first world war. |

I'd definitely go with Mr Bogle's And the band played waltzing matilda, were it an option. That appears on quite a few Irish records, in spite of being about Australians. Nice to see some love for mr Bogle.
