For Christmas I got him "The 'Burbs" on DVD(his favorite movie). He likes Borat but he just got himself that on DVD as well. He likes Steve Hunter novels, but he read them all. He doesn't like new Stephen King, Michael Crichton, Tom Clancy but liked and read all of their old stuff. He also likes historical nonfiction like Seabiscuit.

Rolling Stones 1960s/70s concert bootlegs on vinyl.
Some killer weed. A digital Nikon SLR camera. That's what I'd want my kids to give me.

I always go sentimental and tell them I have nothing for them for their birthday but my unconditional love, and outstretch my arms. It works.

I'd make him an anthology of your best threads on the SY board, printed on glossy paper, collected in a hardcover book with a durable cloth binding, an embossed spine and a full-colour dust jacket.

No old guy doesn't like porn.

for me gift-giving is a very personal thing and a demonstration of how much i know & care about the person. i've given & received gifts as varied as paper clips (though made of silver, not chromed tin), rocks, alaska king salmon in a refrigerated fedex box, autographed books, lingerie, quality booze, ink, houseplants, and handmade crap-- because they meant something to the person.
you know your old man better than any of us, and i'm sure you can come up with something he'll truly enjoy rather than random suggestions from strangers. when people say "it's the thought that counts" it's because, well, you have to put some thought into it, and while you may have doubts and anxieties in the process, that's what counts. that's of course just my personal opinion and nobody should assume i'm trying to impose it on them. feel free to adopt or discard in whole or part. |

the DVD for the Ali G show is awesome if he hasn't seen that. Borat telling the oklahoma city council "I want to make a sexy-time love explosion inside of you" makes it well worth owning. |
