Got invited to see Steely Dan tonite. Michael McDonald is the opener.
Sure, it's a total baby-boomer show, but the tix are comp'd, the bus ride is comp'd and the booze is comp'd. Beats a sharp stick in the eye. Plus, I actually enjoy Steely Dan. Some real terrific musicianship. Any other takers out there????

The fact that their musicianship is terrific is enough for small children to burst into spontaneous laughter.I bet that Thomas Dolby is turning in his grave if he is dead.

They have some good shit and they keep pumping it out. Hey 19 is one of my fav SD songs. Although some of their lyrics are weird and don't make any sense to me.

"Reelin' In The Years" is okay, but Steely Dan and Michael McDonald is not my idea of a good time.

Deacon Blues is the only song I genuinely love by them. The rest is mostly nostalgiac, I think. Though when I listen back on them, I can definitely see where they shaped a bit of my musical mindset, in a subconscious way. They have a peculiar style that feels right to me, but I can't really explain it.

had a great time last night. We skipped the Michael McDonald set and drank and smoked in the parking lot. When Steely Dan came on, it was to Bodhistva (sp?) and into Chase the Dragon (probably my fave SD song).
The mostly 50 & older crowd were way into it. Almost in intellectual appreciation for SD from the crowd. Other great songs were: Hey 19, My Old School, FM, Josie, Peg, but I think my fave was "Dirty Work". It's from their first lp, and it is immediately recognizable. In fact I didn't know it was their song until they played it so well last night. The two gospel-sounding back-up singers were pure gold. Their voices gave me chills. Otherwise it was pretty much a straight run-through on the songs. Of course they all sound good, but there wasn't any "oh my gawd" moments of ecstacy. I've always thought Donald Fagen was a bit on the arrogant side, and Walter Becker seems a little too boring on stage. Great sound though, and again, it sure as hell beats a sharp stick in the eye.

Doesn't the fact that Minutemen covered "Doctor Wu" give them any credibility on this board?
