We have a perfect songs thread...now we need some perfect performances.
Chiyo Okumura- 木遣りくずし (old Japanese song?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiIf8xLvYJg but yeah...totally kickass live version. The Who - A quick one while he's away http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiNsty-4zpE time to get back to work. |

All time best? Hands down JAMES BROWN Please Please Please on the Teenage Music Awards International 1964.. This show speaks for itself. It is the official climax of American music. There was never anything more all encompassing before, and nothing so resonating since. Definitely have to include Grateful Dead live February 18, 1978 as released on Dicks Picks XVIII. The Dead never translated well into the studio, but the electric force of this performance is the epitome of all vibez Dead. Jimi Hendrix Woodstock 1968. specifically at Villa Nova Junction I know, its cliched. But it really was Jimi's best performance. He had a complete band which he only experimented with briefly for a year, he had the buzz of anticipation of a new project and sound, he had the unprecedented crowd, and above all else, his natural charm and stage persona perfectly shined through. Bob Marley Live at the Rainbow: This is everything Bob Marley and the Wailers were. The dynamism, the energy, the sense of immediacy. Sonic Youth Schizophrenia from 1991: The Year That Punk Broke.. This song isn't half as good as this particular live version. My soul burns whenever I hear that tom-rolling breakdown midway towards the bridge. Raphael Saadiq Live at the Artists Den This is the most authentic mo-town revival, everybody born after 1980 should watch this show to catch what that vibe was all about. Too much soul, too much fun, perfectly crafted stage show and performance with that old school choreographed back up singers on point. Prince's Superbowl Halftime Show 2007 The all-time best guitar solo in high heels AND Purple Rain live in the driving rain? Mystical performance!!

Evan Parker (This was a really cool concert. It was pretty early - around 1am - and i had the most disgusting hangover ever)

Love Like Birds - Heavy Heart (from the The White Room Session)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7szbaKfiL8o and some say this recording of Gy!be at the Troxy in London is the ultimate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gmxBRkQd70 all I can say is that I recorded it (the audio, not the video) My personal ultimate gy!be recording is this version of BBF3 at HMV Forum, also London but a year later. You know what the fun part of taping is? You can listen back to your own ultimate live performances, and relive it like you're actually still there. The ultimate performance I ever witnessed, was Vic Chesnutt, with a band consisting of members of Silver Mt. Zion and Fugazi. Those recordings are on Archive.org (here and there), but if you want a video, check this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CemAXdccGyg

Yeah....The Chiyo Okumura one was taken down and I haven't been able to find it. It's thishttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtBtEo3QhE8 except with a big band behind her instead of the traditional instruments. and The Who is always being taken down and re-upped every now and then. here is Jun Togawa. the song is called Punk something....I forget the translation. The absolute BEST version of this song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uxpylXf5f |
