Inspired by Buzzo's "Recommend a comp game" thread, which I mistook for being about recommending really really good compilation albums.

I'll never tire of the Harmony of the Spheres 3×LP box set/2×CD compilation. I bought it for the Loren Mazzacane Connors side, and got to know about five other fantastic bands as part of the bargain. The Roy Montgomery track is worth the entrance price alone. And the packaging... well, the packaging is beautiful, especially on the original vinyl edition.

Released by Drunken Fish Records (DFR-25) as a 3xLP box set in November 1996. Reissued as a 2xCD by Drunken Fish (DFR-50) in November 1999. The vinyl box set was a limited edition of 3000.

Side A - Bardo Pond – "Sangh Seriatim"
Side B - Flying Saucer Attack – "Since When"
Side C - Jessamine – "22:30"
Side D - Roy Montgomery – "Fantasia on a Theme by Sandy Bull"
Side E - Loren Mazzacane Connors – "Revolt! 1. Flames 2. The Gathering 3. Revolt! 4. Fand (a Tear)"
Side F - Charalambides – "Naked in our Deathskins"

Your turn now. Recommend a compilation...

An Anthology of Noise and Electronic Music on Sub Rosa - this whole series is just fucking incredible. All the greats from the Futurists to Neubauten and all points in between.

Another great one: Brain in a Box: The Science Fiction Collection on Rhino. Every great soundtrack song you could want plus space tunes from the likes of Sun Ra, Frank Comstock, Les Baxter, and even John Zorn!

I've recently posted one of my favourites on porky's 'rare or out of print' thread.

Myths, Instructions. Vol 1.

http://rapidshare.com/files/47789347...ons_1.rar.html

and I'm just about to upload 'The Last Supper' featuring SPK, Test Dept, Attrition, Bourbonese Qualk and Muzlimgauze, amongst others.

A few great ones:

Vhutemas Archetypi, a pretty great industrial comp released in 1985:
A1 Laibach (Overture) To...
A2 Laibach Neue Acropolis
A3 Hunting Lodge Tribal Warning Shot
A4 Hunting Lodge Soul-Vac
A5 Gerechtigkeits Liga Five Skandhas
B1 SPK Invocation (Canto To The Departed)
B2 SPK Palms Crossed In Sorrow
B3 Gerechtigkeits Liga End Of The Present
B4 Lustmord Mass
B5 Lustmord Permafrost

The Elephant Table Album is another great one featuring NWW, Legendary Pink Dots, some earlier Merzbow and many many more

Deutschland is a pretty great compilation of weirdo German synth music from the early 1980s on the great and underrated Ata Tak label. Features Pyrolator, Der Plan, Neubauten, Der Moderne Man and many others.

I'll second both The Elephant Table and Tyranny of the Beat. I've had both of those for almost two decades and I still listen to them and use the on the radio all of the time. Great stuff.

Sidereal Rest on Scratch records is another really great one. Lots of '90s noise bands getting mellow among other things.

the sy starbucks comp!!!

there's an album called "fenriz presents the best of old school black metal" or something like that, it's got sodom, destruction, mercyful fate, bathory, mayhem, burzum, sarcofago...mostly good selections, some parts drag, though.

seriously, the blue noise comp sheriff rhys chatham put together from bands of the board, i really like it.

i'll think of others.

I endorse both Mr Peltor's and Mr Drone's selections. I have plenty of compilations, but I can't really recommend any; basically, anything involving soukous/ soca/ highlife is more than well worth picking up.

NB - Glice is hammered.

Nuggets is awesome.

My favorites are the Matador compilations, and a box set called "Left of the Dial", lots of 80's alternative stuff.

Nuggets is certainly good, and started a huge revival in it's time, but overall, I prefer the Pebbles comps. for the more obscure gems of the era. Nuggets can be a great sampler of artists to go find full albums by, while Pebbles contains more groups who never put out more than a single. Since they put everything they had into those one shots, often the results are pretty amazing. How can you do better than a song like "Beaver Patrol"?

Genre related comp. that I HIGHLY (pun semi-intended) reccomend is Crypt record's Jungle Exotica Vol. 1 This is a really amazing anthology of the meeting ground between the Sonics and Les Baxter, and I'll admit, I wasn't that aware there was a middle ground before I got it!

This collection is great!!
I used to own all five volumes back in the day, but they seem to have disappeared from my collection
I just downloaded the complete set from 'The Thing on the Doorstep' I recommend you do the same thing.

yeah, it's really good.

I think my favourite on there is that Big Stick song "Devil's Jukebox".

"And all the boys come running, seducing their souls to rock, seducing their souls to rotting" - something like that, can't remeber the lyrics correctly

That reminds me - Blast First's 'Devils Jukebox' compilation is nice.
