A Bandcamp Listening Party for "White Roses My God" is scheduled for September 19th, 2024 at 12:00 CST. It'll be possible to chat with Alan about the making of the record and a chance to win a copy of the LP.

From The New York Times:
Alan Sparhawk of Low Lost His Other Half. He’s Learning to Sing Again. Alongside his wife, Mimi Parker, the musician created one of indie-rock’s most arresting bands. Two years after her death, he returns with “White Roses, My God.” Sub Pop calls it "a comprehensive feature on Alan". I call it... gift link! That's why I pay 2 bucks a month you know, to share the shit here.

It's a vocoder (Kraftwerk, Neil's Trans, etc); I assume the vocals are then treated with some other effects or something, what do I know.

I didn't realize there was another thread, apologies for the dupe. I visit here through the new subscribed threads option. I'm glad there's enough interest in Alan's solo album and his other projects though (even if it's probably just us), and wonder if both threads on the subject should be merged.
There is a video on LOW's Instagram of Alan explaining how to achieve the vocal effects on "White Roses, My God". It is through the use of a hard pitch controller pedal called TC-Helicon C-1, to be precise. There are videos of him playing some songs and explaining the guitar tunings, too. I watched one the other day in which he made oatmeal for breakfast, and I thought I should copy the recipe. Judging by how the most recent live performances have been approached, the use of the effect won't dominate throughout but it will certainly feature in at least a few songs. A live recording for possible reference: https://archive.org/details/alanspar...dpa4061.flac24 I attended the Bandcamp Listening Party and now the whole album is out. I love it, love the songs, the vocals. Even if not easy to discern due to this presence of abstraction, it sounds good and the soul is there. |
