Sonic Yoof related - "Strange Fruit Abiku turns out to be the first vinyl documentation of both Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth and Tim Foljahn of Two Dollar Guitar"

This was a band whose name was tucked in the "must find" section of my collector brain for nearly 15 years before I managed to finally track down a copy of this exceedingly obscure release, as a review in an old issue of Option magazine once claimed that they sounded like "the Art Bears in a closet", a thumbnail description that seemed custom made to instill fascination in my fevered brain. Unexpectedly, their description squares not one whit with actual contents at hand. No...there's nothing remotely R.I.O. about the hermetic D.I. Y. 4-track post punk maneuvers at play here, though this is a decidedly odd kettle 'o fish nevertheless. As it happens, Strange Fruit Abiku turns out to be the first vinyl documentation of both Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth and Tim Foljahn of Two Dollar Guitar, certainly enticement enough for a certain sector of music fans out there, though there's nothing here suggestive of what would follow in either of their careers. Rather, Strange Fruit Abiku's conflation of the whacked and the dubious yokes frequently gripping de-tuned shambolic instrumental lurch and wobble of a decidedly claustrophobic cast (often cross cut with tape speed fuckery and shattered by primitive effects) to largely insipid girly vocalese in a way that practically defines the phrase chalk and cheese. As frustrating as it is revelatory, I'll leave it to you to be the judge...

Why do people always mix up Danish and Dutch?
Difficult, I know, two small countries somehere next to Germany.

Anyway, thanks Jico.

Notes
Steven Stapleton and Colin Potter were initially unhappy with the limited edition release and an announcement was made on the official NWW website on myspace it said:

"RE: faust/NWW colaboration "disconnected'

colin potter and steven stapleton were horrified and dismayed to find an extra track added to their collaborative album with faust "disconnected" without their consent. they were not informed of this limited edition and feel the inclusion of this live faust track destroys the concept and atmosphere they have tried to create.

dictated by steven stapleton over the phone to suzi firenza"

It is understood that an amicable resolution has been reached.

reign in terror is one of their earliest demos, mutilation is the one that got them signed to combat records.

Nig-Heist "S/T"

Born in the early 1980's (as with Jesus Hisself their birth date is more open to conjecture than the actual date of their demise...until now), Nig-Heist took an early place among the groups of loftier inentions.
As an Artist and a gentleman, and lead singer, Mugger is acknowledged by all in the know to be one of the most exciting entertainers in show business today. A performer's performer, a professional's professional, and an ex-showgirl himself, he has musically delighted listeners and non-listeners (some pay him not just to listen but to "perform"), music-lovers and lovers alike, for years and years now (he could keep it up, but who's countin'? - smile).
The songs we included in this album are all established hits - or should be; and with the Nig-Heist, hits aren't hard to come by. All they have to do is step up to the microphone and Swing! Swing! Swing! Ty Cobb himself never broke so many records - hits n' singles galore! Too many to count, unless you're keeping score!
The borderline between pop and rock has always been a nebulous one. Frequently a group that has succeeded in appealing to one is rejected by the so-called experts (e.g., Joe Carducci), who claim the twain shall never (shout it loud!) never be met. The present set of performances will give pause (1, 2, 3, 4!...) to these authorities.

Sun Ra - The Singles (2 CDs)

.

Sun Ra maintained a big band from 1955 until his death in 1993, even though he was even further out on the fringe of the music industry than Charles Mingus, who only held onto smaller groups.

Sun Ra consistently maintained he came from another planet - and his taste in clothes and harmonies lent some credence to the claim - but he also felt he could connect with a broad terrestrial audience, which is why he continually released singles on his Saturn label. Some of these singles were his trademark space-jazz, but most of them were more down-to-earth-doo-wop, blues, R&B vocals, swing standards, novelty songs and big-band dance numbers. Yet they all had the Sun Ra touch, which made them weird and worldly all at once.

This treasured collection, "The Singles", took three years to produce, collecting virtually every 45s released by Sun Ra from 1954 through 1982. It is considered the holy grail for Sun Ra collectors. It was pieced together from the contributions of private collectors around the world, and sonically cleaned up far beyond the audio capabilities of the original vinyl they were pressed on.

The Fall - Blind Man (promo)

Manchester, England – 2004. This is a one-track promo CD that was sent out to customers who had previously bought any Fall items from Voiceprint. This early demo version of ‘Blindness’ is not available anywhere else. The disc comes by itself in a plastic sleeve and refers to the band’s upcoming album, Cocked, which later became Interim. This shows up on eBay occasionally, which is where I found my copy.

For those of you who are still lamenting the dissolution of the Digital Hardcore label stable, here's a treat from 1998. It's hard to believe this is almost a decade old when Fever managed to put out an album that made hip hop for the next decade sound stale and dated. Fever is the discordant bastard child of digital hardcore and hip hop, helmed by Din ST and Paul PM... taking hip hop out of the twentieth century and putting it square in the middle of a post-apocalyptic future that would make Mad Max think twice about heading out of doors.

As far as I can figure out, Too Bad But True is the only full length release by the duo, but it has certainly served it's purpose: nihilist annihilation... serving the Digital Hardcore Records manifesto of "Fuck all", all too well. Too Bad brings out all of the tricks from the DHR bag: C64 and Gameboy blips, slowed and distorted metal guitar riffs and stabs, blown to fuck drum samples, synths so filthy bleach wouldn't begin to help... and as such, fits nicely within the DHR pantheon next to sonic kin like EC8OR, Shizuo and Alec Empire's Atari Teenage Riot. Empire's touch, however indirect, is felt throughout Too Bad. The entire template had been set before with ATR's digital punk rock, and especially with ATR MC Carl Crack... but Fever do the DH/hip hop much, MUCH better. "Two Poles" is the centerpiece, a loping, breathing and claustrophobic. El-P could only dream of making something so gloriously fucked. Shit, El-Producto stole most of his production steez from this record, the other half coming from Giorgio Moroder soundtracks.

Sir Richard Bishop - Elektronika Demonika

There is no guitar on this album. Limited to 666 vinyl copies released on 6/6/06, SRB's sonic manipulations. A trip into darkness and melancholy. Sir Bishop, formerly of The Sun City Girls, has been gaining quite a bit of acclaim as of late in the 'Freak Folk" scene (I despise that label so freaking much), and while this is nice for him, I must admit it can leave me a little nonplussed, but, seeing him perform solo versions of Horsecock Pfephner to bewildered groups of hipsters will never get old. Now if He'll only come up with an arrangement of "Highway Star" or "Space Truckin'" Click the smoker for his web-site!

MASTER (US) - Unreleased 1985 Album

Yesssss! A holy grail in the realms of metaldom!

If you've never heard of Paul Speckman, first, go grab the first available person you see and have 'em kick you in whatever genitalia you happen to possess, then d/l this album. After that go to the interviews section of this site and acquaint yourself with his long, but unfortunately, not financially illustrious, career.

Suffice to say that he and his indeterminable hordes of bandmates laid most of the foundation for death metal and grindcore. This album didn't even see the light of day til a few years back, and it's a MONSTER. HC viciousness (and lyrical content) wedded with the dynamics of the-then current aesthetics of thrash-- which, when combined, paved the way for a million better-known, but far less-talented acts to build their "careers".
