This week on What's This Called? your host Ricardo Wang is joined in the studio for a live performance by Seattle avant-blues and roots garage rocker Howlin' Houndog!
Airing live Saturday, April 5th 2008 from Noon to 1 PM Pacific Time (that's 2-3 PM for listeners in the Mississippi Delta!) on KPSU STREAMING AUDIO YELPS RIGHT HERE! Or for those closer by using the down home radio: 1450 AM in the Portland OR/Vancouver WA metro area 98.1 FM on the Portland State University campus Citing such influences as Capt. Beefheart, Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Ry Cooder, Johnny Cash, The Yardbirds, Lightnin Hopkins, and Howlin' Wolf, Howlin' Hounddog got his nickname from his harp playing style that makes dogs howl. From the beginning of his musical career in the 1980s through his formation of Vagrant Records of Seattle Washington and the various bands he has been in over many years from the Bassics/MonGrells, the Surrealists, the Long Faces, Pistol Pete and Monkeys With Machine Guns he has developed his style of musical composition. Combining various influences with others from a variety of music from Middle Eastern to Delta/Chicago/British Blues , Psychedelia , Surf, Folk Rock & Country. This has slowly been refined and stripped down to the eclectic roots mash he currently unleashes! |

There is no Playlist for What's This Called? for Saturday, March 29th, from Noon to 2 PM Pacific Time on KPSU, as your host Ricardo Wang had to miss the show for a family emergency.
However, live guest Howlin' Houndog! went on like the musical trooper he is, and rocked the show with a selection of rootsy originals and covers by the likes of Captain Beefheart, The Pretty Things, Robert Johnson and more! Many thanks to KPSU Technical Director Brandon Arends for filling in for me on the absolute shortest notice imaginable as well as turning in a perfect sound mix!
