I'm not a big fan of my lab students, but I don't have anything against any of them. I just don't talk to them.

Ugh, pffft, blah, er, um, duh, er.
I was going to bitch about some things that some of my students did today and yesterday, but I decided to just let it go. I teach an aural skills lab and some (a small group) have been a pain lately. Mostly just not showing up at important times. Trust me - it's not that interesting. However, THIS is interesting: http://youtube.com/watch?v=XjUz8IT0CYg |

you know, when i was a TA (not tits & ass) my students used to call me "professor" because i insisted in wearing jacket+tie to class. this was a way of clearly stating "i'm not your buddy, you little bitch". sure it was a pain to wear the things (i have rarely wear ties these days) but the gimmick paid off dearly. once my superiority had been established (ha) i would be the most friendly helpful bastard they could find, and they gave me rave reviews, but they knew (they knew) not to fuck with me, even for laughs. having said that-- it took me about 4 years to fine-tune this system. one important device was the ability to shift blame/culpability on others, e.g. "the man" wants to test them and i'm here to help! you see? let "the man" be the asshole and you, you are santa claus, you are making sure they don't get royally fucked in the test. they will love you. promise.

students are stupid little shits and people should work for 4 or 5 years before going to university so they have some idea about life and the world, that video was good though.

The problem is that the lab I teach isn't intended to help prepare them for tests. Rather, it's just an aural skills class that I teach and grade, but it's called a "lab". The grade they get in lab is just part of the overall grade that they get in the course, which includes an intro to music history and some basic written music fundamentals (I refuse to call it theory, because it's not). They can do OK in the course by blowing off the aural skills portion - if they do well in everything else. SO, the problem I have is not their behavior in class, but just people showing up and giving a damn. They know that I'm not interested in being their pal or helping them memorize dates for the history part. All I'm there for is to teach them sight-singing and ear-training and how to practice it, but a lot of them think that it's too much effort for such a small part of their grade.

they'll be kicking themselves when they get to the first real level of thery and have to do dictations and recitations. those little fuckheads are lucky they don't have to go through dr. perry like i did, but sam ng (i'm not sure if you know him) is going to make mincemeat of them.
fuck them.

Yes, Sam is the man when it comes to teaching theory. I sat in on some of his classes and he was awesome - playing sequences perfectly and talking and explaining stuff all at the same time. He's really been a good thing for the program. (He went to Eastman - I'll find out if I got in there soon. Probably didn't.) But yes, he will chew up and spit out a lot of the folks blowing off lab now.
