Dead Reptile Shrine- A Journey Through the Darkest of Forests/Isth Narai Ja

If I am in the mood for satan, I like my black metal weird. And in this dark kingdom, where hordes of cookie monster vocalists, double bass drummers, and power chords pervade, I need something more.
Which is why Dead Reptile Shrine are by far and away my favorite. I often compare them to Harry Pussy- if Harry Pussy broke up their records with ambient interludes, chanting monks, and the sounds of crackling fire.
Case in point:
Listen to Harry Pussy + I Don't Care About Sleep Anymore
Listen to Dead Reptile Shrine + Exekutioner of the Final Solution
Listen to Dead Reptile Shrine + Diabolical Plague
Their recordings are pretty much impossible to find- and usually go quick at the few outposts in the U.S. which carry them (Aquarius, Hospital Productions). For that reason, I am making the entirety of their album A Journey Through the Darkest of Forests and Isth Narai Ja available.

This is quite possibly the most fucked up thing I have ever heard. It almost reminds me of Jandek in a psycho-loner sort of way. Hooray!

Great band name too.

more feeling

Have you guys heard Zappa’s Roxy and Elsewhere? In the preamble to Cheepnis he says “Let me tell you something, do you like monster movies?… I love monster movies”. So those of you who know Roxy, it is this voice that I am trying to reproduce in my head when I am saying to you “let me tell you something, do you like solo sax records?… I love solo sax records, I simply adore solo sax records, and the cheaper they are, the better they are”.

Some of the older visitors know that Arthur Doyle is my man. In the world of solo sax blowouts he stands apart. I guess it takes balls of highest density to get out there with no band behind you and blow your heart out like this... Things are not as they seem, world is falling apart, more feeling is needed now and there’s no better proof than this record. Collect them all my friends.

good. thanks man, too bad that's a tape.

this blog makes me cream my pants from times to times, visit it, you wont regret, there's a little something for everyone.

over there you can find gems like this, definetly not their best album but i guess this gives you an idea from what those guys are up to.

Chrome - The Visitation (Rare 1st Album)

Released 1976 or 1977
Siren Records (US)
Cat. No. DE-1000

The first Chrome album is a blend of 70s psych art rock weirdness hinting at the psych-punk vibes that were soon to come with classic albums "Alien Soundtracks" & "Half Machine Lip Moves."
</SPAN></SPAN>
Formed by Gary Spain (bass, guitar, vocals) and Damon Edge in 1976. The band also featured John Lambdin (vocals, guitar and bass) and Mike Low (guitar, synth, and bass). John Lambdin I've heard spent some time in the early 70s playing with the legendary japanese band Flower Travellin' Band.

The first Chrome release is particularly collectable due to the many variations of covers, labels, and inserts. The first spray-painted cover releases included 3 inserts, all of which are quite rare. The initial pressings had a plain looking white label with black text. Perhaps accidentally omitted from the label was "Siren Records", which was subsequently added with a rubber stamp. The second pressing incorporated "Siren Records" pre-printed on the label. Later pressings used an entirely re-designed label featuring silver hand-written text on a black background, typical of the labels used on the next several albums. Most, if not all of these black-labeled records were released with the picture sleeve. All three of these "original" releases of The Visitation were from the same mould (matrix# Kendun DE-1000).

Highly Recommended!
I've included a bunch of the early artwork/xeroxes with the album.

Chrome - Return to Zanzibar

Sorry. I don't think it's been released on CD. I bought it at a TD gig in Deptford many moons ago.
I was going to rip my cassette of Ecstacy Under Duress, but I found out that it's had a CD release so I didn't bother.

After a quick google search for Dead Reptile Shrine, I was quickly greeted with a DRS cassette cover featuring an unmistakable Nazi eagle logo prominent on the cover. Didn't pick up on the song title "Exekutioner of the Final Solution" until seeing the record cover.

Looks like DRS is pretty blatantly NSBM (National Socialist Black Metal). I was thinking about posting this to my blog, but now I'm having reservations. The record is musically excellent... raw, crude, unhinged... unlike any other BM I've heard. Pretty unique. But i can't support the politics involved.

It's one thing to support a band such as Burzum, who's Varg Vikernes is an avowed white supremacist, but keeps the politics out of his music... There are quite a few NSBM bands who, for some reason, label themselves as NSBM but do not appear to involve their political message within their releases, either via artwork or lyrics.

Still, I can't support this kind of stuff.

Bummer, I thought they were cool...

I can understand you're not wanting to endorse that sort of thing - I was the same for a while - but throw a stone in the annals of music and you'll find someone with reprehensible opinions. Personal choice thing, but I find it harder and harder to muster up the energy to protest. I also find it very easy to download records, rather than buy and directly endorse, bands whose opinions may be politically motivated to the extent of money from the records going to militant organisations - I quite like Prussian Blue, but there's no way they're getting my money, as a for instance.

I suppose you're right... if anything, I'd be "stealing" from them... even though this record has been sold out for a while. I also don't see black metal as a very effective recruiting tool.

That's quite a good observation that you've made there. I seriously doubt that any organisation that is actively promoting far-right ideas would really have some black metallers in their ranks. I mean, certainly not a political party that wants to be taken seriously, if I'm making sense.

I'm going to start a new thread for this point, as I'm not sure we've been over the whole politics/ music thing for a while.

What, are you perhaps suggesting that the endless threads about half-understood notions of things that probably aren't important and badly-written 'Whits you'er favrite frigge/ freezer manufocturar?' type threads aren't stimulating?

Cross Current - A Rough Trade Greatest Hits Compilation.

Released in the early 80's on the Base Record label, under licence from Rough Trade. Base Records was the label that released all the Italian versions of the Joy Division albums.

The album includes tracks by The Fall, Blue Orchids, Zounds and Nightingales, and it's not a bad snapshot of the early 80's indie scene in the UK.

Sorry, no cover artwork. The cover is too big to fit under my scanner, and there's nothing on google.

http://rapidshare.com/files/52645337...rrent.rar.html

Enjoy.

Still to come:

Funky Alternatives 1 (23 Skidoo, Tackhead, New Order etc)

You Bet We've Got Something Against You (Current 93, Sonic Youth, The Anti Group etc)

Sunburned Hand of the Man - Jaybird (2001)

Wonderful long freeform psychedelic/space-rock jams. Every track remains consistently musical and engaging, reminding me in parts of Friendsound, Arica (also HERE), Dr. John, etc. etc. Proof that psychedelic music is still alive and remains a fresh and productive genre. Another hard-to-find Julian Cope Album of the Month. One just popped up on eBay and instantly sold for $100. Here's the consolation prize for all of us who lack that kind of cash.
Get it (@256).

(and yes, the tracks tend to end rather abruptly... it's not a problem with the rip!)

Cupol - Like This For Ages/Kluba Cupol EP, 1980

Another NWW List Wire/Dome offshoot. Consists of one shorter track (about four minutes) and a 20 minute instrumental, stretched out reworking of the previous track. This is great stuff; if you like Dome/Wire or just experimental post-punk in general you should like it. The tracks carry a sense of hopeless dread with them and much of the instrumentation sounds very ritual and repetitive (in a good way). This goes beyond Wire's post-punk...
