People whose wallet has been severely hit by buying records of bands that had those two as a prominent influence might disagree with you, my childhood sweetheart.

Could I make a caviatte? The Black Eyed Pea's.
Not really seminal but they just make my blood boil.

I'm not trying to be controversial at all. I've never seen the appeal of either The Cure or The Pixies. I'm not saying they're 'bad' because I'm not even sure what a 'bad' band really is. And I certainly wouldn't say that I despised either band. It's just that neither have interested me and I do at times find their elevated status a little bewildering because of this. Saying that, if I was going to try and muster some kind of defence for The Cure, I'd be more likely to point to the Pornography album than Faith. Equally, when it comes to The Pixies, I think Surfer Rosa is a far better indication of their underlying quality than Doolittle, which I don't like at all. But that's just a taste issue really, as all of this ultimately is. Someone like Sarramkrop can say he doesn't like The Beatles, but respects them. I take exactly the same stance on The Pixies and The Cure, both of whom I respect for their musical impact, but would run a good few miles if asked to listen to either. |

ive always hated hated hated the cure. tried listening to all their seminal records, didnt find even the best (pornography) to be anythung slightly better than cringe inducing. i dont hold it against people who like them, i just cant listen to their tunes without getting angry.

I like The Cure but I can see why someone would get annoyed at Robert Smith's voice, for instance.

I certainly don't despise The Cure. They're just a band that I've never been able to 'get'. The same goes for 99% of bands that fall into the whole 'Goth' category. Saying that, a number of my favourite bands (The Cramps, The Birthday Party) could be said to exist on its outer margins. Nobody brought up in the 80s could avoid Goth completely. It was impossible.

Did I already reply to this thread? I think I did. Oh well, I don't feel like looking:
- black flag [shock! I like a few things but I'm bored by most of it, the songs are usually too long, the lyrics are silly, and greg ginn stopped being an interesting guitarist when he began smoking too mcuh weed and listening to free jazz; they have some good songs and maybe a decent album or two so I don't despise them, but I'd say most of their catalogue is worthless] - the cure [again, I like a few things but for the most part, worthless] - new order [just worthless] - einsturzende neubauten [I love the aesthetic, I love the idea of it, but the music does NOTHING for me] - Sleater Kinney [the two guitars clashing should be really awesome, but this band can't write an interesting song to save their life; just boring and lifeless] EDIT: Actually, I did look back and I already did reply and I said "most of the bands you listed" but I had forgotten what he had listed and I still listed two. So, excellent. |

i dont despise anyband.
i think everyone can write a decent song, and anyone can write a shitty song, some bands have betterr ratios than others. i also try not to waste my time disliking music. my main problem with our local scene, and with a lot of people is they conentrate so much on not liking different things and its as if a scene is based on who doesnt like certain music rather than who loves music. i prefer to waste my time loving music.

Red Hot Fuckin Chilli Peppers. That band has ultra vomit-inducing effects on myself.

damaged is easily the most fucked up and intense hardcore album ever in my opinion. to me, when rollins joined the band, they became unstoppable. their later stuff besides my war and the process of weeding out is all unnecceary, but theyre still one of the bands ever me thinks.
"seminal" means influential. so bands that offt get mentioned as being super important, but they suck. as far as the "goth" thing. i like it. it just means to be bands that go for a slightly darker image, which is cool to an extent. the bithday party, nebauten, joy division, the cramps, the banshees, the damned, etc.., all great fucking bands. but when it comes to bands like alien sex fiend, fuck that shit.

more bands:
the dead kennedys: yea, fresh fruit for rotting vegetables is one of the best punk records ever. besides that? nothing. jello biafra gets way to much credit for the shit he does. the replacements: i like their greatest hits album just because i only really liked them at their most melodic and catchy. i can never sit through a whole records of theirs. just not my thing to be honest. ministry: "the land of rape and honey" is fantastic. i havnt heard anything good besides that though. ministry started as some lame disco band too. then jourensen got fucked up on drugs and found throbbing gristle. anyways, memer the record he made with ian mackaye, pailhead? that shit ruled. mc5: no doubt, "kick out the jams" is fucking awesome. one of the most purely rocking and radical sounding records ever listened too. but their records after this remind me of fucking aerosmith or something, but worse. this band woulda been way cooler if they just did kick out the jams and then became like guerilla fighters working with the black panther party. but nope, they just got old and made a couple lame records.

Yeah, i think Ministry is pretty boring, though "Filth Pig" (which actually is their most boring record -- weird) is pretty good to my ears for some reason.
Dead Kennedys I can't agree with. I think everything they did was great, though Jello was the worst/most annoying part. |
