On the other hand, I look at a film like The House of the Devil, by a talented rookie; which has the potential to really be a game changer in its genre.

With THOTD, West romanticizes the forgotten horror gems of the 70s/80s with an amount of respect that I don't think I've ever seen matched in any similar homage. It chooses to be low-key rather than kooky, and at the same time perfects the craftsmanship of tecniques like the freeze framed opening credit sequence, and 80's dance sequence, with a true sense of beauty.

It's a methodically dry, slow burner that should be compared to something like Rosemary's Baby, or To the Devil a Daughter rather than 976-Evil, or Chopping Mall. It's a 2009 80's period piece done in a 70's style. I think Cabin Fever 2 was his 80's gross out tribute before the studio butchered it to death. He's abandoned it since though -- DUNE STYLE.

Sorry for the rant, I'm just a big fan. I'm glad West found a style that really works for him.

spot on Joe. Spot on. Like I said, I wasn't a fan of West's other films, but he nailed it with HOTD. (Cabin Fever 2 was filmed earlier) Anyway, I was just sucked into the film. Like it was leading me in a slow dance. And I would say that 90% of the films I watch 70s-90s horror. It just felt like rather than HEY LOOK AT THIS FILM ITS ZANY AND HAS AN 80s SOUNDTRACK RETRO FLASHBACK FRANKIE SAYS RELAX! it was actually authentically a mood piece / period piece. Boring? I don't get it. I mean I guess if beautiful paintings are boring because they're not doing something shocking like vomiting dolls...

That INTERVIEW movie was surprisingly fascinating. Buscemi is actually a good director -- LONESOME JIM and TREES LOUNGE are actually great films he directed...

Just finished part III of the series ''Carlos'' about the 70's assasin/terrorist Carlos the Jackal, I liked it and thought it was well done.

do any of you know where to watch some Godard short films?

TheDom, surrealmoviez and karagarga has quite a few of his stand-alone short films, but it's easier just to search torrents of stuff like ROGOPOGOPAG or whatever the fuck.. and ARIA.. and so on... so in other words, you'll have to usually get the full films to get his shorts. But his shorts usually rule. I've got probably 15 of them, but he's made probably 60. No kidding.

you watched so many great films. Mind if I rate them?

le petit soldat - 9/10
woman is a woman - 8/10
branded to ill - 10/10 .. one of my favorites ever
discreet charm - 8/10
exit through the gift shop - I don't usually rate docs, but it's amongst the top 5 I've ever seen. In fact, only STREETWISE and AMERICAN MOVIE are better by my estimation. Amazing film.

I just watched OWNING MAHOWNEY - 9/10 .. amazing film. I thought it was going to delve into cliche, yet it never did. And, damn, is Phillip Seymour Hoffman the best actor we've got going today, or what ? Damn.

I'd give em all about the same ratings but put discreet charm down a little more. It didn't really grab me all that much. Week end is a much better bougoeisie kick in the ass.

cinemageddon does rule. thanks for advetising it! I just nabbed a giant andy kaufman compilation thing. !!!!

& shiiit on those private sites keeping me from the cool stuff. have you seen any of his shorts before breathless and are they any good? I've seen Aria (it's on netflix watch instantly.) pretty meh I thought.
still slowly making my way through his films. it's going to take a LONG time....

On paper I should love Dangerous Games but like almost everyone else, I also hate it. And it is mostly because of Madonna (who's been dreadful in everything since DSS). More generally though, It feels like a Casavettes movie but where the intensity of something like Faces is simply replaced by a bunch of unlikeable people acting hysterically. I'm generally a Ferrara fan but there's something inbuilt into all his films where they teeter on the edge of feeling like a group therapy session and in some cases, like DG, they fall over that edge. He made The Blackout a few years later that tackled similar themes but was far better, I thought. I tend to think he made that film because he wanted to try and correct the mistakes of DG.

One of my all time favorite directors, this is a great film. I'd highly reccomend LANDSCAPE SUICIDE if you haven't seen it, it's pretty similiar. He has, uh, like 150 films, and I've olny seen maybe 17 so yeah.

TheDom, I though Godard's short was the only good thing in Aria (the one about bodybuilders -- strangely, this is the ONLY FILM HE'S DONE not covered in that book that came out a few years ago, EVERYTHING IS CINEMA, which is not even a biography, it's more like a godard NOVEL, talking about just about everything he's ever done -- except that short. Curious.). His shorts before Breathless are okay, I think they're all on the Criterion DVD, one is a documnetary of a lumber yard. Uh.. his best short is probably ANTICIPATION, the last time he filmed Karina (as a prostitute, heh)...

DEMON, THE BLACKOUT is interesting in that it supposedly wasn't finishd -- or even close to it -- so the fact that it works at all is pretty bizarre. I think it takes some patience to get into that one, but I ended up liking it. I am not saying DANGEROUS GAME is a perfect film -- I'm a Keitel fanboy, let's face the facts, I'm probably going to overrate his films based on his involvement because he always brings such raw intensity to his films -- and I can see why people dislike it.. at the same time, it sure is one dark, harrowing, intense film in parts.

I've been getting into the experimental director RAOUL RUIZ and watched

CITY OF PIRATES - 9/10

ON TOP OF THE WHALE - 9/10

Okay, this guy is just FUCKING INSANE, I dunno why no one has ever mentioned him before, information about him is absolutely scarce, except one review on some website comparing some of his films to Lynch (Lost Highway-era). I can see that, I guess. This guy makes dark edgy exhausting experimental cinema that is positively bizarre in places but really entertaining and makes you think. It's going to be a chore to acquire all of his works, and I've heard he later worked with stars in odd genre films (shades of Mamet and.. uh.. Lynch actually... and Herzog.. and Cronenberg... actually, what director hasn't started out in a kind-of fucked-up/experimental mindset and then eventually did genre pictures? Even Cassavettes did! I mean, they have to make money). Still, if you get a chance, at least read the synopsises of this guy's films, as they are all really interesting -- I just read one about a lawyer who "takes on cases that he knows he can't win". And that's the whole film. And that sounds like a damn good premise for a film to me. Anyway, the two above films represent wildly original experimental and sometimes hilarious stuff.

Also, USED CARS is another one of my favorite movies, one of the few "comedies" I actually reccomend. It's worth mentioning that at a Shellac q&a, both Bob Weston AND Steve Albini said it was their favorite film of all time. I can see that.

Yeah I've got it on my hard drive, people are sharing his stuff on soulseek a lot so I just download it from there so I don't need to ruin my KG ratio. I started watching his '13 Lakes' last night but then realised it was just shots of lakes for 2 hours hahaha so I just lay listening to music with it on in the background and that was okay.

I bought:
Basket Case
Basket Case 2
Basket Case 3
Brain Damage
Bad Biology (already seen this one)
Frankenhooker

So I guess soon I'm gonna be well versed in Frank Henenlotter movies.
