I know what you mean. I just like shit that I like.
I'll go and buy a JoJo cd and not give a shit what poeple think. Though my friends are always dogging me about it. Yet I also like noise. I'm not afraind to say things that I do are easy, becuz I enjoy doing them.
Personally I wouldn't pay more than $20 for a painting no matter who did it.

first off, i in no way want to associate noise with the art world and that was not my intention, just drawing a parallel and using an analogy. i am glad that rick mention low/no brow noise, which i think the majority of it is. the conception that noise is restricted to hipsters, elitists, art students, art galleries, and is inheritly pretentious and high brow is misguided.

i dont remember exactly how i worded it, but i didnt mean that my sister brings home pieces of the same caliber of jackson pollock (not that i nessicarily think he is super high caliber), but the same technique and style.

You are probably right about the misguided part, but at least in my area, that is all it is, stuff for the hipsters, elitists, etc, etc, etc... so I can't help but see it that way most of the time. And I didn't mean to harp on Pollock so specifically, it was just the name brought up, so it worked for all of my analogies

I don't know about where you live but here being in a noise band isn't likely to move you up the social ladder.

In your area, there is Realicide. Go see a Realicide show.

So many people call people they don't like "hipsters" and "elitists"...I've seen a dude wailin' free jazz in the most boring swim trunks and flip-flops from Long's Drugs, and when the local alt-weekly wrote about it, they called him a "hipster." Why? Who could be any less hip than that guy? He was the complete opposite of hip.

Throwing the "hipster" tag around too much makes one look insecure.

I think Realicide is a pretty incredible experience. I saw them here in Sacto with Vankmen, and it was outstanding. Perhaps the very most PUNK thing I've seen all year. And it was on tour with Kevin Shields and Gabbertree...two of the most unpretensious "noise-out-and-have-fun" acts you can ever hope to see. They'd be happy to explain the process of their noisemaking. Very accessible when it comes to sharing.

Yeah, noise dudes aren't hip at all; they're some of the most repulsive freakish people I've ever seen. Myself included; I'm going bald at 21! Noise isn't about style or hipness or elitism. It's about being fucking SKRONKTASTIC.

They were using the original, non-stigmatic definition of hipster from the 1940's. The Jazz Hipster.

I think that the fact that a lot of noise makers have a hard time elevating their music to an art form is very much their downfall. If some noisy sounds are to be pleasant to the ear and that's it, I might as well listen to those that I hear everyday in my enviroment and be done with it. Really, why spend £5 on some second-class racket that has a sense of guilt about existing in the shape of a musical artefact, when I can listen to some birds singing to me while a chainsaw is making a racket in the distance? You tell me why.

Because noise artists put the birds singing through a delay pedal and the chainsaw through a circuit bent phaser pedal?...

Oh. Actually, I don't have a reason.

I guess it's the question of why do I like "silver sessions" or Sunn O)))? I can make feedback, I can play any Sunn O))) riff; it's not like what they're doing is particularly musically special . It just so happens that the birds aren't ALWAYS singing, so if I decide I want to listen to them sing, they've been conveniently collected on a CD for me to listen to.

But don't mistake me for defending noise. Most of it's shit, but I'm glad it exists.

My point is that unless you make a racket that I can take seriously, it's like, whatever. The market for birds singing has been thriving for some time, so noise is nothing new to those feathery creatures.

They said that after WWII painting in the old way was pointless. pollock did what NOONE had done, and just because it is seemingly easy to create something similar, does not discredit the beauty of the original works. what are Pollock, Motherwell, DeKooning, Kline, etc. other than art "noise" in a very real sense? Motherwell is everything

I'm not saying that EVERYBODY does, but really, everyone here knows it as much as I do, a LOT of people do. So what's the big deal? Nothing really I guess, but it's just funny that these same people will trash somebody else for buying a Nickelback cd or shopping at Abercrombie and Fitch, and for the same reason, doing it because in their realm of peers it's the cool thing to do. I personally feel (and I'm making it clear that this is a personal opinion, so nobody gets all up in the air about it) "artists" like Pollock and noise "musicians" cash in on peoples gullibility to accept anything as art as long as they are told it is art. They actually did an experiment to test this buy having a bunch of kindergardeners do abstract paintings, and then hung the "art" in a gallery saying they were done by an acclaimed artist. People feel for it like monkeys reaching for a cookie in a jar. If they were told they were done by 5 year-olds during arts and craft hour they would dismiss it as just that, but since in their minds a true artist did them, they were masterpieces.

this has nothing to do with artist's making art and everytthing to do with the power of suggestion and pre-conceived ideas. Judge not the art or the artist byt the responses of the horde.

realicide rules insanely. i booked them here and was supposed to play but ended up being out of town, still have yet to see them. not really noise though, just closely aligned with the noise scene and incorporates some elements of noise.
