When this was album was first announced I immediately liked the name and hoped that that was a good indication that the record would be good.
Then I listened to some early live tracks and it just sounded like the same old stuff and all my optimism dissipated. I sort of forgot about it until hearing it was out last Friday and so I went and bought a copy on Saturday. I liked it right away and it's growing on me with each subsequent listen. Definitely his strongest solo effort since Psychic Hearts for my money. The sprawling feel of the songs is reminiscent of Murray Street-era Sonic Youth for me. Sedwards juicy solos feel perfectly appropriate for the 70s-esque record title. Yes, all in all I approve of this album. Cusp sounds like it could be Arcade Fire or something hehe. I do mean that as a compliment. This is a good record indeed. Perfect for spring. Just bought tickets to see him live in Glasgow next month. |

I guess I can hear the Helium reference but just as much so, the riff can be easily referenced to being very Malkmus/Pavement-esque circa Brighten the Corners, and not to mention that Thurston's guitar tuning is a direct rip from Malkmus's...

It's not just the style, it IS the riff from Helium's "Skeleton". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VK2q71f0XOI And of course Sonic Youth toured with them before A Thousand Leaves. http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/sy/song147.html Quote:

In this interview Thurston says there was a 7" single "Mx. Liberty" that was "available to anybody who preordered the new album." Anyone know anything about this? |

I finally bought it last night. Bought it new from Amazon, so a free mp3 version came with it. I love that they do that by the way. Much easier than buying on iTunes and then realizing you NEED a physical copy of the album and having to buy it again (something I've done many times because I'm stupid).
I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to buy it. I haven't not purchased a Thurston studio album (or a Lee album or Body/Head album, or SY album) on the first day it was available in freaking forever. Haven't listened to the MP3 yet. Again, no idea why. Not sure what's wrong with me. |

I don't think we're supposed to talk about "Skeleton" and "Sunday." I think we're supposed to pretend that's just not a thing. But yah. I haven't looked up the tunings of "Skeleton," but if there's a single difference it would shock me. Even the intro to "Sunday" is vaguely reminiscent of the intro to "Skeleton," in my opinion, which makes me think it's probably a deliberate homage. I'll bet Mary and Thurston have talked about it. I'll bet (hope) it's all out in the open, and something they laugh about. Because ... if not... then... well... He's so lord (hallelu-doota-lang-do-Lang!) Wish he were lord (hallelu-doota-lang-do-Lang!) |

I've noticed the similarity between both songs before. It could be coincidental. I play guitar and sometimes when you are writing you subconsciously start playing something that then brings you to something you have heard or listened to in the past. I do not think that Skeleton is in CGDGBB tuning so it would not surprise me that it was unintentional copy... I mean this sort of thing happens all the time in rock music all over the place and musicians own up to it and many don't... I just don't see the big deal at this point because this is going back 20 years ago and neither Mary or Thurston have brought it to light as far as I know.

Yeah, I'm saying I think it's something Mary and Thurston have talked about it and acknowledged. Probably before "Sunday" was even recorded. Not saying it was a ripoff... like I said it was probably an homage. Intentional, and kind of *wink wink.* But come on man. It's the same riff. The only difference I can hear is in the effects/mixing/production. Tonally, it sounds exactly the fucking same. Open up Spotify or whatever you use and play the songs and reexamine whether you think it's a coincidence. |

SO, I finally listened to this for the first time yesterday, and so far I'm pleased. I like hearing Steve's drumming swell and pulse around these songs. His style on this album feels very Sonic Nurse-y to me. I'm liking what I'm hearing, for sure.
I think as far as Thurston albums go, his biggest departure from his traditional style, Trees Outside the Academy is probably my favorite, if only because it offers up something that you can't get anywhere else. But for a Sonic Youth-y jam, this album sounds like it was more well thought-through than Demolished Thoughts. Not sure how I'd line it up with The Best Day or Psychic Hearts yet, but I really love both of those albums, so the fact that I'm not sure is a good sign. Honestly, I wasn't expecting to like it very much. I loved "Chelsea's Kiss," and I thought "Cease fire" had a nice crunch to it, but as much as I hate to say it, Thurston's been getting on my nerves a bit in recent years. He just floods Facebook with shit from two different accounts, and seems to be going through some kind of delayed adolescence in terms of his propensity for obnoxiousness. He's also starting to look a bit like a puffy-faced Willlem Dafoe (evil in a sleepy way), and none of this is very palatable to me. But I'm happy to say that this seems like a winner. Is it re-treaded ground? Well... yah. But it's also nice to hear sounds like these in 2017, when everything either seems to be diluted Beyincé or diluted Kanye or formerly promising indie bands grasping at straws or becoming legacy acts. I am glad I ordered this, and glad I gave it a chance. I did so half expecting to want to turn it off after five minutes, but I didn't. |
