look children, this is how it works.

first, the sorrow of many is consolation only to fools (translating spanish saying here-- mal de muchos, consuelo de tontos-- how do you say that?)

but really, life goes this way:

when you're a teenager and in your early 20s, you think your friends are like blood brothers 4evarr etc etc.

but then everyone get their girlfriend/gayfriend/wife/husband/partner & they become so occupied with relationship/family life that friends recede to the background.

now people can keep and build new friendships after becoming domesticated, but it's rarer than before. friendship takes time and work and when the majority of your energy goes elsewhere well duh.

this of course does not mean the end of your social life.

the wife and i see friends every week-- some are hers, some are mine, some are common. but they are not BLOOD BRUTHAS 4EVARRRR. it's a more quiet thing.

and really, as much as i like hanging out here, internet friends can't help you move house.

as for the "best friend" title, i've moved around so much that it's hard to keep those frienships; and then time passes and your highschool friend and you have little in common--oh yeah garden state didn't "discover"that. but anyway. friendships mutate. sometimes you're friend with someone for years and they turn into assholes and you gotta say bye. sometimes you change & everything around you changes. that's life.

now as for my unrequested advice to fénix: find a new house without rabbit shit where you can actually have people over & entertain them in a civilized manner, have dinner parties, orgies, what have you-- shit free of course.

that'll be $50. thanks.

Understood, but not everybody runs with a crowd that is inclined to go the Family Way (which obviously can disrupt social life, but there are numerous examples to the contrary in my own social circles), and there are any number of ways "life goes."

yeah exactly. you've had a pretty stable life as far as location & relationships (youve been married since you were 19 or so, & living in the same place) so its easier to maintain long friendships.

its easier to keep your best friend from high school than it is to meet your best friend when you're 30-- can happen but it's unusual. not saying impossible or can't happen, just that it's rarer.

and then i am so radically a different person than i was in highschool that i cant be best friend with those who were my best friends. if i had stayed similar, yes.

of my 4 best highschool friends i only have things in common with one now, he's a human rights activist-- the other 2 went for a bougie life and we have little in common. another we stopped getting along after he had kids, not sure exaclty how. but the distance of 5000 miles makes it difficult to keep in touch with the last one left.

friendships i've made after that are good, but haven't been as strong, and it's eaier to drift away. there seems to be some kind of an age window for that type of bond, not sure if it's hardwired.

I've lucked out in that my closest friend (who I met when I was 22) has changed and mutated along a similar path to mine. Overall, I would say that I am more socially active now than at any other time in my life, but it is all within a fairly insular music crowd. And I don't have any kids.
I don't know if I could be friends with any of my highschool friends now (aside from my wife of course).
Maybe one, but I haven't talked to him in years.
And yes, my geographical steadiness sure has helped a lot. If I moved I think it would be pretty tough, because I don't usually talk to people I on't know.
