Goddammit, I foegot to keep the new Actress album on my radar. I was SURE it wasn't out until May, but apparently it dropped on April 19. For all I know I've already posted about it being out and forgotten.
Got it and listened to it though. Good stuff. Not as good as Ghettoville, but that's to be expected. If you haven't, head over to your streaming music service of choice (or, like, a record store) and pick up Actress - AZD (Ninja Tune) |

The new Jlin album Black Origami (Planet Mu) is really something else. It's just extremely intense, and has an almost elemental sound. It's like Jlin cooked up a footwork reduction with a Walter White chemistry set.
I don't know if I've heard a more impressive work in or around the "footwork" semi-genre all year. |

Todd Terje back just in time with a brilliant "cover" of "Maskindans" that is entirely his own. Featuring Det Gyline Triangel. What a satisfying, epic fucking dance track!
Todd Terje - "Maskindans" (YouTube) Todd, please hit us with a proper follow-up to It's Album Time!!! This is important! Not quite as important as that Amygdala follow-up I've been waiting for slow-ass DJ Koze to make for nearly half a decade, but still. Terje is pretty much without peer when it comes to this kind of dance music. |

EDIT: oh yeah and jlin's album is indeed really really impressive |

Ok, you got me. I don't believe I'm familiar with Parris. I just went nuts searching Apple Music, then hit Resident Advisor when Apple yielded no results (aside from a female rapper named PARRI$ who I didn't care to look into further). RA has a small page devoted to an artist named Parris, with absolutely minimal citation, and no reference to Hemlock. So I went to Hemlock's page, and yup, there was something right at the top. Kind of hard to find additional information -- just says the new single or EP is out "June 2017," but I checked the "Your Kiss is Sour" track, and you're right. It's quite something. The video is 100% disgusting though. Millipedes and pomegranates and maybe some ultra close-ups of spiders and Venus flytraps? I don't know. Deeply gross though. It's here if you haven't seen it. Tell me more about this guy! I'm intrigued. |

he's this guy: https://www.discogs.com/artist/3733236-Parris-2 He used to be in the Keysound-affiliated "130" grimey scene alongside guys like Wen or Beneath before they all got to other things. There's one of his tracks on Keysound's 2014 Certified Connections compilation (which you should check out - Keysound artists were mad mad creative at that time). I actually DJed before him on a night at that time haha. Anyway yeah his style evolved a lot and his new ep is wicked EDIT: oh yeah and he runs Soundman Chronicles, which discography is pretty much perfect - everything from SMNCHR004 to 007 is gold |

Cool thanks.
Hey, are you into DJ Koze (aka Adolf Noise) at all? I mention him pretty regularly on this board, but I've never really received even a smidgen of acknowledgment from anyone. The few people I've talked with over pm about dance/techno/electronic stuff have largely either not listened to my recommendations of his, or have simply not been into it, but ... Jesus Christ, for my money he is by far the most interesting artist in the Euro-dance scene. Here's the first song from his 2013 album Amygdala. The entire album is enchanting and demented and glorious, but this is the song that's probably most likely to be widely enjoyable. Give a listen and please tell me you get it! Fucking FINALLY! Someone acknowledges DJ Koze! Thank fucking Christ!!! Yes, I think that between his solo albums, his production work, his DJing, and his playlists and random singles ("XTC" *drool*), he's pretty much the best artist making that kind of music. Everything he touches has that distinct "Kosi" touch (see his remix of Super Flu's "Jo Gurt" ... my god, it's a completely different song!) But yeah, it sounds like you're into the bassier stuff. Which I also love, but it doesn't quite capture my imagination and emotions as much as what Koze does. Re: Nathan Fake ... I *love* his new track with Prurient, "DEGREELESSNESS," but that's all I've heard from Providence at this point. EDIT: Listening to Fake's Providence on Apple Music now, and you're right. It's directly up my alley. Very good indeed. Like, holy shit!! |

So, turns out guest was right about that last Aphex Twin thing being just an overhyped publicity stunt for NTS.
BUT... Now there's another cryptic countdown on the official Aphex Twin page. Can't help but wonder if he might be stoking the fires for the release of a new proper album. http://aphextwin.warp.net Proper albums are few and far between in contemporary electronic music. Too many fuckin' EPs, video game soundtracks, 3-track singles, data dumps, etc. To me, none of that shit can compare to getting an actual fucking album, with packaging and a theme and art and a tour, signaling a new era for an artist. It's been almost 3 years since SYRO dropped, and defied expectation by being really goddamn good, if quite a bit less revolutionary than the RDJ Album, I Care Because You Do, Druqks, or the essential Selected Ambient Works records. I know RDJ has been busy in the years since SYRO, with at least one substantial project coming out every 8 months or so, but as good as, say, Cheetah was, it was still not quite enough to give me my fix. Speaking of that, when in the bloody hell is DJ Koze going to properly follow up Amygdala?! Goddamn the man!!! |
