and i know he wasn't a 'rock star' but River Phoenix's death was pretty unexpected and dramatic.
Phoenix died at age 23 from a drug overdose of heroin and cocaine (speedball) outside the Viper Room, a Hollywood night club partly owned by actor Johnny Depp. The autopsy also revealed traces of cough syrup, crystal meth and cannabis in his blood. Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Michael Balzary, also known as Flea, was present at the time, as was River's younger brother Joaquin. He was rushed to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center but any attempts to resuscitate him were to no avail. He was pronounced dead at 1:45 AM. |

D Boon, guitarist and singer of the Minutemen. Was killed in a van acciden by broken neck (he wasn't wearing a seatbelt). His death put an end to the run of the Minutemen, and devastated his bandmates, especially his childhood friend, Mike Watt.

For over 20 years Nico had been an on and off (though mostly on) heroin addict. In his very entertaining book "Nico - Songs They Never Played on the Radio", James Young, a member of her band in the 80's, recalls many examples of Nico's almost fiendish behaviour due to her addiction. Ironically, just before her death, she had managed to kick the habit and had embarked on a regime of exercise and healthy eating. On July 18, 1988, Nico was injured riding her bicycle whilst vacationing with her son, Ari, in her favorite haunt of previous years, Ibiza. She hit her head and was admitted to a local hospital. X-rays revealed severe bleeding in her brain, and she died several hours later. |

Jaco Pastorious
In the early to mid-1980s, Pastorius began to experience mental health problems, including symptoms of bipolar disorder. These were worsened by heavy recreational drug and alcohol use. Although his on-stage and off-stage antics were already well-documented, his mental health and addiction problems served to exacerbate his unusual and often bizarre behaviour. There are dozens of anecdotes and stories about his outlandish behavior and eccentricities, though some were highly exaggerated. His musical performances also suffered. During this time he played in various solo acts and many nightclubs in Fort Lauderdale and New York City. He fell out of public favor and became an outcast in the music business. His final address while alive was Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale. After sneaking onstage at a Carlos Santana concert September 11, 1987, he made his way to the Midnight Bottle Club in Wilton Manors, Florida. He was trying to show off his playing. There he was brutally beaten into a coma after an altercation with the bouncer of the club, Luc Havan, who was trained in martial arts. Coincidentally, this location is barely one mile from his childhood home. He suffered irreversible brain damage. After life support was removed, his heart continued to beat for three hours. Jaco Pastorius died on September 21, 1987, just ten weeks short of his 36th birthday (incidentally, within weeks of the age at which Mozart died), at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. He is buried at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Cemetery in North Lauderdale. Havan was charged with aggravated battery, and served four months in prison. The recorded legacy he left behind, particularly the work with Weather Report, Joni Mitchell and his own Word of Mouth band, remains for the ages. Miles Davis honored the late bassist on his album Amandla with the Marcus Miller composition "Mr. Pastorius," as Jaco was an inspiration to Marcus Miller. Jeff Buckley After completing touring in 1996, Buckley started to write for a new album to be called My Sweetheart the Drunk. In 1997 he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, bought a house there and started recording demos on his own 4-track recorder. He went into the studio again, recruited a band, and plans for the new album looked hopeful. On May 29, 1997, the evening that his band came to join him in his Memphis studio, Buckley went swimming in the Wolf River, a tributary of the Mississippi River. His friend Keith Foti remained ashore and, after moving a radio and guitar out of reach of the wake from a passing tugboat, looked up to see that Jeff was gone. Despite a rescue effort mounted that night, Buckley's body was only spotted a week later by a tourist on a riverboat and brought ashore. It was widely speculated that Buckley may have committed suicide, partly because he went swimming in the river wearing his heavy boots. The biography Dream Brother, written about him and his father, reveals that the night before his death Buckley reportedly admitted to several loved ones that he suffered from Bipolar disorder. It has been confirmed by autopsy that Buckley had taken no illegal drugs before his swim, and that a drug overdose can be ruled out as the cause of his death. A recent statement from the Buckley estate insists, "Jeff Buckley's death was not "mysterious", related to drugs, alcohol, or suicide. We have a police report, a medical examiner's report, and an eye witness to prove that it was an accidental drowning, and that Mr. Buckley was in a good frame of mind prior to the accident." After Buckley's death, a collection of demo recordings and a full length album he had been reworking for his second album were released as Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk. Three other albums composed of live recordings have also been released, along with a live DVD of a performance in Chicago. Janis Joplin During the fall 1970 recording sessions for the Pearl album with The Doors and Phil Ochs producer Paul A. Rothchild, Joplin died, aged 27, of an overdose of unusually pure heroin and alcohol, after being off drugs for a period of time. This occurred on October 4, 1970 at the Landmark Motor Hotel located at 7047 Franklin Ave, room #105 in Hollywood, California. The last recordings she completed were "Mercedes-Benz" and a birthday greeting for John Lennon on October 1, 1970; Lennon later told Dick Cavett that her taped greeting arrived at his New York home after her death. She was cremated in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Westwood, California, and her ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean. The album Pearl, released six weeks after her death, included a version of Nick Gravenites' song "Buried Alive In The Blues", which was left as an instrumental because Joplin had died before she was able to record her vocal over the backing track. Not recognized by her hometown during her life, she was remembered much later. In 1988, her life and achievements were showcased and recognized in Port Arthur by the dedication of the Janis Joplin Memorial, with an original bronze, multi-image sculpture of Joplin by Douglas Clark. Jerry Garcia (we miss you dood) Jerry Garcia died on August 9, 1995 of a heart attack exacerbated by sleep apnea. Garcia, who struggled with drug addiction and sleep apnea for much of his adult life, was staying at the Serenity Knolls drug rehabilitation center in Forest Knolls, California at the time. On his passing, he was honored by President Clinton as being "an American icon." Memorial services were held in Golden Gate Park on August 13, 1995. Along with the band members, his family and friends, thousands of fans were present, many singing and playing in drum circles. |

Cliff Burton
While on their European tour, Burton and Kirk Hammett drew from a stack of cards to see who would get the top bunk on the bus. Burton picked the Ace of Spades and so he got to sleep on Kirk Hammett's bed, as Hammett recalls on MTV's 1992 Bio of the band as well as in the VH1 show "Behind the Music". Burton died when the band's tour bus hit black ice (though it is still disputed that they may have crashed because the driver may have been drinking) and flipped over in rural Sweden (Kronobergs län). As the bus was skidding out of control and eventually rolled over on the grass, Burton fell out of a window, landed underneath the bus and was crushed by the bus. [1] Burton was crushed again when the winch cable lifting the bus off him snapped, dropping the bus on him a second time. The other people on the bus (James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, the drum technician, and two guitar technicians) recount seeing Burton's feet sticking out from under the bus. That sight has haunted them for a long time. Burton's body was cremated. At the ceremony, the instrumental "Orion" from the album Master of Puppets was played. Because of this, Metallica never played Orion in full live until June 3, 2006, although bits of the song have been used to bridge between other songs. Tim Buckley On June 28, 1975 after returning from the last show of a tour in Dallas he decided he could relax and snorted heroin at a friend's house. Having diligently controlled his habit while on the road, his tolerance was lowered, and the combination of a small amount of drugs mixed with the amount of alcohol he'd been consuming all day to celebrate the tour's end was too much. His friend took him home thinking he was merely drunk. Tim was put to bed by his friends, who told his wife that he'd also used some barbituates. As she watched TV in bed beside him, Buckley turned blue. Attempts by friends and paramedics to revive him were unsuccessful. Reportedly, Buckley's last words were "Bye Bye Baby," delivered in a way reminiscent of the line in Ray Charles' "Driftin' Blues." Buckley was 28. Nick Drake In 1974, Drake felt well enough to write and record a few new songs. However, on November 25, he died of an overdose of the antidepressant Tryptizol. The coroner concluded that the cause of Drake's death was suicide, although this was disputed by friends and relatives. Antidepressants of that type (tricyclic) are lethal if ingested at doses higher than as typically prescribed. His mother recounts that he must have had difficulty sleeping and had got up in the night to have a bowl of cornflakes. It's unclear whether he took more pills to help him sleep or to take his own life. John Entwistle John Entwistle died in a hotel room at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on June 27, 2002 one day before the scheduled first show of The Who's 2002 US tour. The number of the actual room in which he died has remained a closely guarded secret, ostensibly to prevent the room becoming a shrine/place of pilgrimage. The Las Vegas medical examiner determined that death was due to a heart attack induced by an undetermined amount of cocaine. Though the amount in his bloodstream was not great, the drug caused his coronary arteries — already damaged by a pre-existing heart condition — to contract, which led to the fatal heart attack. Entwistle, like Townshend, battled cocaine addiction through much of his adult life. |

Judy Garland
The shortcomings of Garland's childhood years became more apparent as she struggled to overcome various personal problems, including weight gain and serious drug addiction. She was found dead in her bathroom by her last husband, Mickey Deans, on June 22, 1969. The stated exact cause of death by coroner Gavin Thursdon was accidental overdose of barbiturates; pathologist Dr. R. Pocock found 4.9 mg of Seconal [6] in Garland's blood. Garland had turned 47 just over a week prior to her death. She was residing in a rented flat with her husband in the Chelsea section of London at the time of her death. Upon Garland's death, The Wizard of Oz co-star Ray Bolger commented: "She just plain wore out." Layne Staley On April 19, 2002, Staley was found dead in his home. His body was surrounded by various drug possessions and equipment. He was thirty-four years old. As he had apparently died two weeks earlier, Staley's body was not immediately identifiable, and a positive identification was not released until the next day. The autopsy report later concluded that Staley died after injecting a mixture of heroin and cocaine known as a "speedball". By coincidence, the coroner's office estimated that he died on April 5, the same date that fellow Seattle Grunge rocker Kurt Cobain was estimated to have died eight years earlier. Gram Parsons In the late 1960s, Parsons became enamored with Joshua Tree National Monument. Alone or with friends, he would disappear in the desert for days, searching for UFOs while under the influence of psilocybin or LSD. It was seen by these friends as a rare crevice of sanity in his otherwise disfunctional life. After splitting from Burrell, Parsons would frequently spend his weekends in the area with Margaret Fisher and Phil Kaufman. Before his tour was scheduled to commence in October 1973, Parsons decided to go on one more excursion. Accompanying him were Fisher, personal assistant Michael Martin, and Dale McElory, Martin's girlfriend. Less than two days after arriving, Parsons died September 19, 1973 in Yucca Valley, California at the age of 26 from an overdose, purportedly of morphine and alcohol. According to Fisher in the 2005 biography Grievous Angel: An Intimate Biography of Gram Parsons, the amount of morphine consumed by Parsons would not be lethal to an addict and that he had likely overestimated his tolerance considering his past experience with opiates. Fisher and McElroy were returned to Los Angeles by Kaufman, who dispersed the remnants of Parsons' stash in the desert. Dimebag Darrell On December 8th, 2004, while performing with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, Dimebag Darrell Abbott was shot and killed onstage by Nathan Gale. Abbott was shot a total of five times, twice at point blank range in the head. He was 38 years old. Three others were killed in the shooting: concert attendee Nathan Bray, 23, of Columbus; club employee Erin Halk, 29, of northwest Columbus; and Damageplan security guard Jeff "Mayhem" Thompson, 40, of Texas. The band's drum technician, John "Kat" Brooks, and tour manager, Chris Paluska, were injured. According to police, Gale fired a total of fifteen shots, taking the time to reload once, remaining silent throughout the shooting. When security staff and audience members climbed the stage to try to stop him, Gale fired at them, killing Thompson and Halk, who had attempted to stop the gunman with a wooden table, and wounding Paluska. Gale then took Brooks hostage, holding him in a headlock position after the technician attempted to wrestle him to the ground. When the hostage moved slightly, Columbus police officer James D. Niggemeyer, who was the first police officer to arrive at the scene, shot Gale in the back of the head with a 12 gauge police issue shotgun. During the rampage, nurse and audience member Mindy Reece, 28, went to the aid of Abbott. She and another fan administered CPR until paramedics arrived. According to some reports, victim Nathan Bray was also attempting to render assistance when he was killed. |

Tupac Shakur
On September 7, 1996, Shakur attended the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon boxing match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. After the boxing match, Shakur spotted 21 year-old Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, a member of the Southside Crips in the MGM Grand lobby. Shakur rushed him and knocked Anderson down, and Shakur's entourage beat him. The incident was captured on the hotel's video surveillance. Anderson and a group of Crips had beaten up a member of Death Row's entourage in a Foot Locker a few weeks earlier, precipitating Shakur's attack. After the fight with Anderson, Shakur met up with Suge Knight to go to Death Row-owned Club 662 (now known as restaurant/club Seven). Shakur rode with Knight in Knight's 1996 black BMW 750i sedan (Images 1,2), as part of a larger convoy of cars including some of Shakur's friends, The Outlawz, and bodyguards. At 11:14 P.M., while stopped at the intersection of East Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, Shakur was shot in a drive-by shooting. Shakur was hit four times, twice in the chest, and once each in his arm and thigh, while Knight was scratched in the head by a piece of flying glass. At the time of the shooting, Shakur was riding alongside with Suge Knight, with his bodyguard following behind in a vehicle belonging to Kidada Jones, Shakur's then-girlfriend. The bodyguard, Frank Alexander, stated that while he was about to ride along with the rapper in Suge Knight's car, Shakur asked him to drive Kidada Jones' car in case they were too drunk and needed additional vehicles from Club 662 back to the hotel. Shortly after the shootings, the bodyguard reported in his documentary, Before I Wake, that one of the convoy's cars drove off after the assailant but he never heard back from the occupants. After arriving on the scene, police and paramedics took Shakur and Knight to the University Medical Center. Shakur was placed on life support until his death six days later, on September 13, 1996, at 4:03 PM EDT. He was 25 years old. The official cause of death was respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. After his death, Shakur's body was cremated. Family and friends reportedly spread his ashes over the Pacific Ocean near Los Angeles, California. On March 9, 1997, Wallace was attending the Soul Train Music Awards at the Peterson Automotive Museum on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. Other guests included Busta Rhymes, Heavy D, Da Brat, Aaliyah, Jermaine Dupri, Jagged Edge, Yo Yo, and Sean "Puffy" Combs. Just after midnight fire marshals shut down the party and Biggie left with his friends in a black GMC Suburban. By 12:45 a.m. the street was crowded with people leaving the event. Biggie's car stopped at a red light just 50 yards from the museum. While waiting for the light to change a black Chevy Impala crept up alongside Biggie's car. The driver of the Chevy rolled down his window and pulled out a gun and shot six to ten bullets into the GMC Suburban, most of which hit Biggie in the chest. While it was believed he was killed almost instantly, he was rushed to a Cedars Sinai Medical Center in downtown Los Angeles and pronounced dead fifteen minutes later. Freddy Mercury According to the book Mercury and Me by partner Jim Hutton, Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS in the spring of 1987. Despite his claim to have tested negative for HIV in a 1987 interview, the British press nonetheless stalked the singer during the final years of his life.[21] Although rumours about his health were rampant, he continued to deny that he had AIDS. However, from the video for "These Are the Days of Our Lives," which represents Mercury's last appearance on film, it was clear from his gaunt appearance that he was seriously ill.[22] On November 22, 1991 Mercury called Queen's manager Jim Beach over to his Kensington home to discuss a public statement. The following day, November 23, the following announcement was made to the press: "Following the enormous conjecture in the press over the last two weeks, I wish to confirm that I have been tested HIV positive and have AIDS. I felt it correct to keep this information private to date to protect the privacy of those around me. However, the time has come now for my friends and fans around the world to know the truth and I hope that everyone will join with my doctors and all those worldwide in the fight against this terrible disease. My privacy has always been very special to me and I am famous for my lack of interviews. Please understand this policy will continue." A little over 24 hours after issuing the statement, Freddie Mercury died at home in the presence of close friends at the age of 45. The official cause of death was bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS.[23][24] Although he had not attended religious services in years, Mercury's funeral was conducted by a Zoroastrian priest. He was cremated at Kensal Green Cemetery and the whereabouts of his ashes are unknown, although some believe them to have been dispersed into Lake Geneva. The remaining members of Queen founded The Mercury Phoenix Trust and organized The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. He left £500 000 to his chef, £500 000 to his personal assistant, £100 000 to his driver and £500 000 to his partner, Jim Hutton. Mary Austin, his life-long friend, inherited the estate and now lives there with her family DJ Screw DJ Screw died of a heart attack in 2000. His cause of death was rumoured in the media to be either a codeine overdose or merely the result of long-term buildup of codeine in his system. However, long-time Screwed Up Click member Z-Ro revealed in a 2006 interview that the autopsy performed on DJ Screw revealed a sample of ice (methamphetamine) mixed in with the codeine. Z-Ro, along with other S.U.C. members, has stated that Screw did not use ice, and fully believe that someone within their large group sabotaged Screw by slipping the substance into his codeine one night, leading to his death. |

Big Hawk
At the age of 36, Big Hawk was killed on Monday night May 1, 2006 at about 10:30pm in Houston. It is alleged that he was on his way to visit a friend to play dominoes and was shot multiple times as he walked down the side of the house. He had been working on bringing together all the remaining Screwed Up Click members to record a group album called The Takeover. Jam Master Jay Mizell was shot in the head and killed in a Merrick Boulevard recording studio in Queens at 7:30 p.m. on October 30, 2002. The other person in the room, 25-year-old Urieco Rincon, was shot in the ankle. A 2003 affidavit used by federal agents to obtain a search warrant of the Murder Inc. record label offices has been revealed by TheSmokingGun.com, and the affidavit shows that Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff, a convicted drug dealer and longtime friend of Murder Inc. heads Irv Gotti and Chris Gotti, had been keeping tabs on 50 Cent and was plotting to kill him. The murder was allegedly planned as retaliation for a song that 50 wrote about McGriff's drug history. "The investigation has uncovered a conspiracy involving McGriff and others to murder a Rap artist who has released songs containing lyrics regarding McGriff's criminal activities," the affidavit reads. "The Rap artist was shot in 2000, survived and thereafter refused to cooperate with the law enforcement regarding the shooting. Messages transmitted over the Murder Inc. pager indicate that McGriff is involved in an ongoing plot to kill this Rap artist and that he communicates with Murder Inc. employees concerning the target." The affidavit also says that investigators believed that Murder Inc. employees continued to conspire with McGriff in trying to murder 50 after he survived the 2000 shooting. The New York Daily News has also reported that authorities have investigated whether McGriff targeted slain Run-DMC member Jam Master Jay for death because the deejay defied an industry "blacklist" of 50 Cent that was imposed due to the aforementioned song. The affidavit says, "Law enforcement agents are investigating the possibility that [Jason] Mizell [a.k.a. Jam Master Jay] was murdered for defying the blacklist of 50 Cent." Mizell was survived by his wife Terri and three children. He is interred in the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. Fela Kuti It was announced that he died on August 2, 1997 in Lagos, Nigeria. Later, it was revealed that he succumbed to AIDS-related heart failure. Peter Tosh Tosh was in the beginning of an entire restructuring of his career when, shortly after the release of his 1987 album, No Nuclear War, he was murdered in his home during a burglary. He died on September 11, 1987. Only one of the three killers was caught. |
