I gave it a 6.I reckon that 6 is the year 0 of all ratings. You really need to have a nerve to post this stupid polls on this mighty band's website.People who feel like using numbers to express their appreciation or disgust for a record have come a long way,it seems.A long way to show how stupid they are.

It's a pretty cool summer album. It's got a vague kinda Beach Boys feel to it (NOTE - That's Beach Boys feel, not sound).

Judging by your rankings, I'm probably not going to like RR. Although I wouldn't have given DDN a 10, or, in fact, bothered to think at all for any reason about numbers, I somewhat concur with the general sentiment of this post.

I'm also willing to bet that the average age of those who gave it an 8 or better is older than the average age of those who gave it a 7 or lower.

Well I think I'm older than everyone who has voted so far and I gave it a 6...
so there's a decent piece of corroborating evidence to back up your 'theory'.

Its not a bad album but its not stellar either (compared to their back catalog).
they've (thurston) said they have little intention on "breaking new musical ground" so that is up for interpretation but w/ that being said i would say you're not gonna get some ear shattering great stuff outta this band anymore i think, they just continue to fine tune their trademark sound within the pop song medium and thats perfectly fine as that is their objective so no one should be let down or have certain expectations because of this, now with that said based on their previous efforts and music of the same type i give Rather Ripped a 6 (and i'm 31 yrs old). i can see how those can give higher marks, but on a whole for me the sound and feel of this album is unbalanced, almost all of the abrasiveness/edgieness known of SY is missing (which i believe was intentional based on thurston's comments in the recent Wire article where he stated they sought out to make an album that could be compared to Blondie's Parallel Lines which had a different and softer feel as compared to anythign they'd done up to that point...) also its lyrically off and weaker than normal and the song structures do seem too cliche and predictable (which doesn't necessarily mean thats bad). |

There are many ways I could do it, but I think your method, a 1-10 scale, works just fine.

Hey, this might be the first time we've agreed on something in 5 or so years of board banter. Of course, since I post once every two months, that doesn't count for much. In retrospect, I should have just said I also think that it's awful. Oh well. |

The more i listen to it, the more i like it. If i thought i could translate my feeling into a single number, i would probably give it a 7. Rats and Pink Steam are gems.
Even though it's not really an album track, Helen Lundeberg is their best song since... i don't know, a long time ago imho ! It has everything ! |

Good album. Not great so a 7 for it. It reminds me of Washing Machine songs, when it's good its pretty damn good. Then there are somg songs that just spoil it. I also think a lot of songs are let down by there choruses (Sonic Youth are making a lot more chorus now). I'm currently listening to incinerate and if it wasn't for the chorus it would be much better.
But that's my opinion. |

my old username was chris griffin. I have no idea anymore if we even posted in the same thread more than once or twice, though I probably got pissy about something sometime.

I think at first I gave it a 7, but now maybe lower. A few songs are very good but when I buy a sonic youth album I except them all to be strong not just the odd one or two. Reena is probably my favourite song. I just think they could have achieved more musically. Surely they are capable of more then what they put out. Someone said something about Thurston not trying to break musical boundaries or anything but I don't see why they shouldn't be trying to. Also, if this was the first sonic youth album I had listened to; I'm not sure whether I would have bothered to come back for more; although I did first listen to dirty, and I thought that was amazing; not so much now.
I think it is definitely thier weakest album out of the lot. It doesn't annoy me to listen to but it just isn't that interesting. Well ,that is what I think for now. 0 or 1 is a bit unfair in my opinion but everyone is entitled. Evol: 10/10 Rather Ripped: doesn't even come close |

When I first heard Nurse I was blown away, not expecting it to be as good as it was, and I still think it's one of their best records. Not the case with Rather Ripped, so compared to that it's a disappointment. I've decided it is good though, a 7 at least.
