great interview with broaderick, reflects on everything from discovering punk rock when he was a kid, playing really fast crust punk and subsequently creating grindcore with napalm death, head of david, godflesh, and now, really inspiring guy.

Anyone heard the new Jesu ep? I took a cursory listen of it, it's decent. Every Jesu song is starting to sound exactly the same. One of the new songs has the exact same chord progression as the middle of "christian woman".

i think jesu is heavy for heavy's sake if that makes sense.
+ every live video i've seen from them has been embarrassing to say the least. |

they arent really heavy. theyre brutal at times, but the whole point of that band is to balance the brutal with the beautiful. and accusing broaderick of making something "heavy for heavys sake" is kinda ludicrous, hes been making brutal music for 25 plus years, its just what he does.

Heavy for heavy's sake? Sure you aren't confusing Jesu with Godflesh? Jesu isn't heavy at all (except that Man/Woman song), at least not in the clichéd context (downtuned fast guitars thrashing away over 500bpm).
But I've avoided live videos, I bet they suck. |

what i mean is it lacks nuances and ideas and all sorts of clever moves that make music interesting to me. I'm not judging. I guess he's really good at what he does and is a respected musician and all, but i've had hard time understanding what people like about jesu and i know a shitload of people with acquired excellent taste that love them to bits so....Nonetheless it sounds like heavy drone with shapeless and boring drums to me.
I've never carefully listened to Godflesh so no risk of any confusion between the two. and yes the live videos kind of go my way but hey well. forgive me ha ha |

I dunno, to me it's like if Slowdive and Godflesh mixed (with more leaning on the Slowdive side of things). That's probably the best way to put it. Shoegaze as filtered through more of a distorted, layered sound instead of an overly reverberated sound. I don't think there's anything to get or understand, Jesu just makes good songs. Even though every EP he releases kinda diminishes the effect of the project, Jesu has still released more quality music in the past few years than most bands have released in their whole career.
I dunno, it's probably nothing to get excited about, but Jesu is still one of the best bands around right now in my opinion. |

I wish JKB would have just released 2 Jesu albums and let the band die.
I don't know why I feel this way, maybe because they have an AMAZING sound but there isn't much you can do with it really. |
