although I currently do not own a pair, I have worn "old school" pumas for almost 20 years because, I am....wait for it.....old school.
ON TOPIC: I have no empirical data because "I don't hang out with those dudes". |

I think it's okay to own a few things in the Hipster Bingo card...as long as you don't Bingo.

Fashion victims are not the same as someone who is comfortable with fashion, looks after their appearance, and happens to have decent, stimulating taste in 'stuff', be they records, music, books, movies etc.
'Hipster' has taken on a whole new meaning since the 60's, when you were considered hip if you were into wacky jazz, opera, as well as avantgarde music, and you generally had a habit of always being on the lookout for interesting things, all while dressing in rebellious-looking clothes. Since EVERYONE with vaguely decent taste in music who also happens to dress in a faux-dishevelled, geometric, quirky way is labelled a hipster these days, all those with a lack of self-confidence into the same sort of music feel automatically cut-out and take the higher moral ground, often venting their supposed superiority at any given opportunity, which makes them feel better about themselves when 'THE HIPSTER' is dragged down to their own level. |

Speaking of the change in the meaning of words, check out this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Semantic-Antic...2576538&sr=1-7 I saw it the other day, and I'm probably gonna get it. I don't know if hipster is in it or not though. Sorry, back on topic now...

I see what you're saying, and while I'm sure it might be true in a lot of cases, that argument does remind me a bit of the old 'politics of envy' mantra that I heard in the 80s: where anyone who decided to poke fun at vulgar displays of consumption was dismissed as doing so out of petty jealousy. (Which I'm sure you didn't mean.) Anyway, call me old fashioned but while a lack of self confidence might inspire some people to laugh at the sight of a 45 year old man riding a kid's sized BMX bike down Brike Lane, for others it's just really really funny. |

My brother pulls off a flat cap really well and I have a snug-fitting sweater (though it isn't too small, just exact length and close fitting). Also I have a pair of deteriorated chucks that I still keep around.
In my early days in college I was told that I had a 90's fashion because I had long hair, wore a green and black flannel over-shirt, and chucks. Yet this combo was entirely subconscious on my part. I didn't wear the typical ripped jeans and I washed my hair every day. A lot of my fashion was accidental until later in college when my boyish looks gave in to my young man looks. |
