So I pretty much can not stop listening to Microcastle. I think it's great. Yes it's a lot poppier or whatever. But it's an excellent, solid album. I feel like with CRYPTOGRAMS it was about the space around the songs. And on this one it's like 'ok, how much structure can we cram into one song?' It's crazy good.

They at times remind me of like an ambient Cramps or something, like sorta Gothic Rockabilly with some beautiful use of Atmosphere. "Flourescent Grey" was great for sure, the new one is pretty good, but not gonna end up on my best of list. They have come a long fuckin way from "Turn it Up Faggot" though, that record was a piece of shit.

Yeah, I only listened to TURN IT UP once... but really I think the new one is excellent. Definitely on my best of 08 list. CRYTPO made it to my best of 07, and yet I thought it unlikely they'd do it again. But honestly I've loved this and the Atlas Sound record this year. So go figure.

Rob, I kind of bought it thinking "I'm probably gonna hate this and realize that Cryptograms was a fluke and never listen to Deerhunter again..." but it's f'ing great.

I think they rip Twin Peaks' soundtrack in a terrible way.

Can't wait to buy Microcastle, but I'm trying to decide whether to hold out for the wax...

I must agree that a lot of the guitar tones, and even some melodies do remind me of Twin Peaks stuff. BUT I can not agree that it's "in a terrible way." |

I've had the chance to see them live on more than one occasion, but never have.
Strong band, overall. |

I think they're alright. Not a fan of them. I've seen them twice. First they opened for Circa Survive. They were alright, but then the band Ours played after them and they were so bad so that made the deer hunter sound good i guess. Second time I saw them, they opened for the fall of troy and a bunch of people were booing them. They don't sound bad, just too boring for me.

Haha. Fall of Troy fans should boo. Deerhunter, like 'em or not, will never write a song as good as F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X...

I'm kinda dissapointed, was really looking forward to this record.
Cryptograms/fluorescent had some incredible songs, but this I don't like. I can't understand the appeal, there are no real hooks, nothing happens in the songs, it even aren't good pop songs. Weird era cont. is slightly better upon first listen but still nothing really special. Maybe I just don't get it |

That's really weird to me. Bare in mind that I loved CRYPTOGRAMS, but my feeling on MICROCASTLE is that each song is loaded with hooks. Like I feel like the band tried to fit as many hooks into each track as possible. I mean, if you dnt like it, you dnt like it. That's fine. It IS a very different record than CRYPTO, but I definitely don't see how you dont hear any hooks in there. To me it's totally a Deerhunter pop album. |

Yeah it sure is a deerhunter pop album, and I like pop albums, but this seems like really safe pop to me, just regular chord patterns and conventional scales, without special chords or a few notes that give you goosebumps like on cryptograms, the only thing that can do that here is this quiet - loudapproach.
But I really want to like it, maybe I should listen to it some more |

You should. I mean, I get what yr saying, but some times a song doesnt need a "special chord" and can use a conventional scale, and just be nothing more than a really great song.
