I don't hear them. They must be kind of buried.

True, they aren't as prominent as on previous albums. Trompe Le Monde, as a whole, is their busiest/noisiest album in my opinion.

So many people saying Doolittle, how disappointing... I really don't think it's that great, I don't know why it's so universally praised. Surfer Rosa is more groundbreaking and passionate.

S R is best cause it's raw, yet brilliant intelligent. Come on is only second for me cause it's so tiny. but the songs are stellar. The two of them both deserve to be #1. Bossa Nova should get more respect. Maybe it's too dark for some, and trompe is pure adrenaline with a hangover. THese last two you can sort of hear the band splitting. Doolittle is still okay, but it begins to lose something the first two have...modesty perhaps?

I can't stand half of the tracks on Doolittle... whereas I LOVE every track on Surfer Rosa.

Yeah, it loses the pixies madness in places. It's like a sandwich with gourmet bread on the outside, and shitty processed turkey on the inside.

I do think S/R is more groundbreaking, but I think Doolittle is the more enjoyable/listenable/fun album. I enjoy it a lot more than S/R, even though I see that it's probably not as "great" from a rock history perspective. I think it's probably one of the most perfect rock-pop albums ever made.

btw, after listening to TLM about 4 times now, the only vocals I can identify as Kim Deal-like actually sound like either Deal highly synthesizerized or Black making his vocals sound like Deal. I don't think there's a true Deal vocal on the whole damned record.
Okay, maybe on Palace of the Brine, but man he's got her buried down low. Okay, now I hear her on Jefrey with One F... "Gracious..." Nice. Her voice is one of the reasons I first felt the band was worth checking out.

DOOLITTLE has such flat production. They're even played sort of... stiffly? I mean compare "There Goes My Gun" on the LP vs the BBC version. It's too bad, cuz the songs ARE good.
But SURFER is so hottt. Plus it has "Something Against You." |

Flat production? I don't think that at all. I think it's pretty lively and full.

I dnt know. The mix just sits poorly with me.
I mean, compare it to SURFER. You can really hear the personality of each instrument. |

But Doolittle is a different record. Different kinds of songs, more R&B. The production values seem appropriate, to me, in each record.

Well, when making that post, "Nobody" didn't LITERALLY mean "no one replying to this thread", it just means the vast majority. Just like "Everybody" voting for Doolittle doesn't literally mean every single person replying... hell, I broke that rule as soon as I replied with surfer rosa. Anyway, I just felt like being quick and snappy instead of explaining "No one except for 3 or 4 weird people will vote for Bossanova". Obviously I know someone would vote differently... but the end results would be the same. Sooooooooooooo, looking at the results, Bossanova has the lowest votes. Doolittle has the highest votes. (I'm not counting Come on Pilgrim either way) So... I was right. |

In England... I believe... there's a cd that has surfer rosa and come on pilgrim on one disc.
That would definitely, without any question, be the best. |

it was hard to decide but surfa rosa is my favorite with doolittle at a close second.
trompe has a couple good songs but I cant stand hearing the pixies be spacey like that...I also think some of the writing on that is a bit...off. I can't describe it but it felt kind of half-assed to me. You can tell because the breeders album after trompe and franks first few solo albums are so fucking awesome in their own rights. but together their writing styles didnt work anymore...anyhoo |

Whoo!!!!!!!
It's not available here. I actually own everything the Pixies have ever done, one of the only bands I literally own everything by, including singles and the greatest hits album and stuff. I dunno why I still have that shit, I don't even like them that much anymore. But I loved them, they were my favorite band... uhhh.... 7 years ago. |
