Oh, sorry about that. I hope the missus doesn't get too angry that it's been brought into the house again.

_slavo_, unless a person knew who you have in mind, it's a difficult answer to give.

I am. I have bought completely useless compilation albums as intros to bands (e.g. The Fall). However on the other side of the coin ive bought really great ones (Tindersticks) which i still enjoy as much as the full albums. I tend to feel Sonic Youth wouldnt work in compilation mode, but it can vary. |

Hey, Perhaps i werent clear. I dont mean in Nick Caves case, i havent heard much of his stuff. I meant in general some bands dont work at all in compilation format (e.g. The Fall, IMO) but some work just as well (e.g. Tindersticks IMO). I reckon Screaming Fields of Sonic Love wouldnt be a great intro cos the albums those songs are drawn from are very different in feel, albeit maybe not obviously so. I really am not making any sense in all aspects of my life at the moment so i probably have confused you with my rambling nature. |

SY's problem compilation-wise is the same as The Fall's - Too long and varied a history. It would take at least a 4CD set to do a half-decent SY compilation. But Screaming Fields was a good roundup of the pre-Geffen era.

i didnt forget, that's how that album is set up. however, i have to say, you got a point. in that case, the friend should receive a well-documented representative mixtape, rather than an official album; then they can go & pick whatever they want according to their tastes. Quote:

If you want to fet a feel for the early days of the band, look for a copy of the Screaming Fields CD. Or if your taste is more "mainstream", Rather Ripped is a good palce to start.
