Speaking of Flaming Lips... They really should be working on something new (like, properly new) if their history is any indicator of their present recording practices. Yet I've heard nothing about any new Lips releases for 2015. Yeah, on their last few studio LPs they've taken a good 3-4 years between albums, but usually even their off years are filled with miscellaneous releases. I am starting to think they should wind things up soon. As much as I love them, they're starting to sound nothing at all like the band I fell in love with all those years ago. I'd rather they make maybe two more unmistakably Lips-like albums, then focus on their myriad pet projects. Seeing Wayne Coyne with Kesha and Miley Cyrus is starting to make me feel old and confused. I think they should play on or co-produce some tracks for Kanye, like Justin Vernon does when he's not being awful all over. |

Oh, KMD - Black Bastards reissue is dropping for Record Store Day. That's a motherfuckin must have right there.
... Oh yeah, and Sonic Youth is reissuing Bad Moon Rising, Evol, Screaming Fields of Sonic Love and Sister.... no idea if they're going to be deluxe 2-disc affairs like the interrupted reissues of the 00's, but I am still interested. Though why Pitchfork gave Bad Moon Rising an 8.1 and didn't even name it a "best new reissue" is a mystery to me. Perhaps those fuckers are finally approaching a median age that makes early SY simply a thing beyond their understanding. What limited fanfare BMR received is probably perfunctory. They're probably just following a set of rules laid out by past staff writers, stating that "in the event of a Sonic Youth release, rate high and gush but don't try to understand the music itself. It's good, trust us. Now enjoy your ILoveMakonnen you little bitches" |

Kesha is talented, she just chooses to limit herself to shallow party music.

i've come to a conclusion that Cherry Bomb's 1st half is pretty awful, except "Find Your Wings" and "Blow My Load". the 2nd half is on point though. "Smuckers" is still the best song for me there.

when i blasted it through my speakers, it sounded pretty boring. but now i just finished listening to it on my headphones and liked every song! this is my top 5 so far: 1. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly 2. Earl Sweatshirt - I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside 3. Curren$y - Pilot Talk III 4. Drake - If You're Reading This It's Too Late 5. Joey Badass - B4.DA.A$$ / Lupe Fiasco - Tetsuo & Youth.. i guess |

You're singing a different tune, it seems. Glad you like Pilot Talk. But you sound totally underwhelmed about Joey and Lupe. ? |

Hell yeah. But hey- it's Kanye. When does a Kanye guest spot not turn out to be the best track on an album? Ask Rick Ross or Game ... Hell, I only gave Jesus Piece a chance because of how electric Ye's 5 word chorus was. But I don't think the first half is trash. I think it's refreshing. Tyler's music has been so slow and dirgy and downright fucking plodding and exhausting to listen to. Wolf was infuriatingly simplistic... There was no point in wasting time on such a empty hull of a rap record-- a redundant amusical "fuck"-fest-- in a year defined by convention breaking hip hop masterpieces, and reinventions of classic genre archetypes. Cherry Bomb has this incendiary horror disco, death synth sound to it that is actually fun to listen to! For so long I've been worried that OF (particularly Tyler and Earl) would get stuck in the creative quicksand of shock-rap, only to become novelty acts or unkillable cult stars like Insane Clown Posse and Eminem. But Cherry Bomb actually feels like progress. A step away from the thoroughly beaten to death sound of early OF. I'm still waiting for I Don't Like Shit... to "pop" for me. I'm waiting for a time when listening to someone ejacu-hate assaultive, bleak spitballs over sparse, claustrophobic beats actually sounds like a good idea! But maybe it will and I'll do an about face of my own. Never know. |

Well... shit. I think both albums are incredible. They may be suffering a bit because of the overwhelming effect of recency > primacy in hip hop, which makes it hard for any album that isn't brand new or *not yet released* to hold the attention of listeners... But I still think Tetsuo & Youth was a triumph. Aside from some typical Lupe lyrical foibles, it is a really well thought out and well executed experiment. And Joey's version of East Coast '90stalgia is definitely a win. I haven't listened to it as much as I thought I was going to, but every time I do I'm quite surprised at how well it all comes together. I do skip some tracks, though. I think my list for 2015 is more or less the same, only with a few additions: 1. To Pimp A Butterfly 2. Tetsuo & Youth 3. Mr. Wonderful 4. Pilot Talk III 5. If You're Reading This It's Too Late 6. B4.DA.SS 7. Sour Soul 8. Cherry Bomb ... Meh... |
