Whoa, I've been listening to this Southern Lord sampler CD tonight and it has an amazing track by Wolves in the Throne Room. I just checked out their other stuff and I'm now officially a fan. About 90% of the time black metal leaves me mostly indifferent, but this band totally grabbed me. I'm going to get their CD tomorrow if I can find it. http://www.myspace.com/wolvesinthethroneroom If only my neighbours knew how lucky they are that I'm listening to this on my headphones at 3am instead of blasting it through the speakers. |

yeha! Black metal is in awesome shape at the moment, with bands like Blut Aus Nord, Shining, Darkthrone and Watain all releasing killer stuff lately. On the other hand Death metal is the exact opposite - havent heard a decent DM release since Unholy Cult by Immolatoin, all the bands seem to be about whos the fastest shredder and blast beater, with no thought given to atmosphere, feeling ot songwriting. Black Metal rules! Its pretty nasty, but a lot of its actually really punky, or at least has a really punky attitude . Check out the latest Darkthrone 'The CUlt is Alive' - its pure punk! Also check out 'The Work Which Transforms God' by Blut Aus Nord - only a stones throw away from Sonic Youth if you ask me, lots of discordance, chiming bits, harmonics, bends and sonicy half-riff thingamajigs - sounds like the world falling down around you.

I recently heard a Bone Awl tape and I have to say they are pretty amazing. I can hear a bit of a hardcore punk influence which is weird for black metal. Really simple stuff but really cool.

have you ever listened to ildjarn? they were the first black metal to come out doing that really primitive hardcore sounding stuff i think, and to my mind they're the best in that style. some of his later stuff went into (boring) ambient synth territory but earlier records like Forest Poetry are awesome. i read an interview with striborg where he sited ildjarn as a big influence. i love the sleeve art for forest poetry too: |

there's a label called e.e.e. recordings that specializes in putting out christian extreme metal, the one CD i have (Flaskavsae - Philosophies) is fantastic super primitive, droney, buzzing black metal, except it's not black, it's unblack.
http://www.e3recordings.com check these guys out, they play wooden metal http://www.myspace.com/varghkoghargasmal |

I've been listening to Fen and Krieg lately. Got their EPs, which are quite decent stuff both.
Fen's been compared to Alcest, but I haven't got around to listening to them yet. anyway, Fen is a crossbreed between mogwai, slowdive and burzum perhaps. in good and bad way... |

So, is Varg out of prison now or what? After his parole was denied in 2006, his new release date (or parole learings date, I'm not sure which) was supposedly set for April 2008. I haven't been able to find anything definite.

And now I will list some things I like to listen to:
Early Mayhem (Up to and including DMDS) Everything by Darkthrone Mutiilation Vlad Tepes Belketre Nortt Nattefrost Immortal (everything they've done is awesome and/or hilarious) some Burzum Bathory (his oldest albums are the blackest I believe, unless I'm mistaken. newer ones he does other things...) Behemoth's album 'from the pagan vastlands' |

ive been listenin to burzum's anthology a shitload over the past three months. some of his stuff could have been just as safe being released by warp than a black metal lablel, some of his stuff even borders on gorgeous. it took me a long time to look past the gimmicky-ness of black metal, as well as homophobia, racism, and misogny of it, but then my brother, who listens to tons of black metal, got me into mercyful fate, mayhem, emperor, all the classic shit, and i was hooked. black metal is just as symphonic and beautiful as it is brutal. i love it.
side note: darkthrone's trasylvanian hunger is my favorite black metal record of all time, as well as being in my top 5 all time metal records.

The sexism, racism and homophobia of certain metal bands isn't that much different from that of certain hip hop, I really don't see much difference between the two. In many cases it is not more than juvenile or cunning bravado. Once you got that and you stop taking many of these people's philosophies seriously you begin to enjoy the tunes much better. I mean, Burzum is an arsehole who deserves to rot in prison, still I wouldn't mind if he is allowed to make music while he's banged up. I don't get the warp thing, why is that? |
