often in rock music a band's ugliness is in direct proportion to their rockingness, not in the case of they might be giants though |

I think humor, at its highest level, is very personal. What you consider funny and what I consider funny might be very different. I think drama, on the other hand, is more universal. For example, most people can agree that a sad movie feels sad, even if they don't like the movie.

Ween is a really funny band. Check out Gene's multiple vocal styles on Pure Guava.

I'll always have a spot for Weird Al, cuz my Dad was such a weird al nerd. WHenever the next weird al record came out was always a bonding thing with me and my dad growing up.
I remember getting pissed about the nirvana thing tho, then finding it funny as hell a few years later. |

Half man half biscuit?
Generally being "funny" isnt enough, if the music is crap it undermines whatever comical under/overtones there are unless its just a comedy act with perfunctory music used as a vehicle. Stick some vaguely funny lyrics to a decent song however and it can work, but i can only think of good songs that have funny moments within them rather than songs that are funny as a whole - like Garden by the Fall where he goes A JEW ON A MOTORBIIIIKE. You kinda have to build something up for an image like that to be funny, you cant do it straight off the bat.

MY dad used to have an album by Shel Silverstein called 'Freakin at the Freakers Ball'. He found it hilarious - especially when stoned.
I found it mildly amusing as a teenager. Certain songs have irritated my funny bone over the years - 'Gordon is a Moron' by Jilted John, 'John Kettley is a Weatherman' by Half Man, Half Biscuit, 'Ice Ice Baby' - by Vanilla Ice, and 'Can't Touch This' by MC Hammer to name a few. I find just about all Black/Death Metal hilarious - those guys just try too hard! The same with alot of the new crowd of so-called 'Industrial' bands. Nurse With Wound, Coil, and Current 93 have had their moments too, my favourite being Coil's reworking of the theme tune to 'Are You Being Served', called 'Going up'. It was used as Jhonn Balance's funeral music.

I think a lot of those bands are very aware of the humorous aspect of what they're doing |

That's cool. It's the ones that don't see the funny side that crack me up the most.
