Oh yeah, for a second there I forgot that the 3 Songs were originally a single. I think I even remember seeing the Sub Pop copy on ebay.

That is because there was only one true grunge band, Mudhoney. Melvins were sludgey metal. Nirvana was aggressive punk. Soundgarden was more stadium rock in the zeppelin tradition. pearl jam was a classic rock band.

Screaming Trees were also on K originally. However both Screaming Trees and Beat Happening not only put out singles on Sub Pop, but also were on the Sub Pop 200 compilation which essentially defined the label and the NW sound at the time. Beat Happening also had several albums released on Sub Pop at various times, many of which were later rereleased on K (and some vice versa) and they can be found on Sub Pop's site listed as a Sub Pop band. What's more, Bruce Pavitt and Calvin Johnson were both Evergreen students and KAOS djs together and completely supported each other's underground music forays from the get go and were completely in cahoots despite each owning their own label. Steve Fisk, who produced all of the early Screaming Trees was also part of that TESC circle. My list: Green River (who really kind of started it all, even before they were on the label as Pavitt's Sub Pop columns in the Rocket in Seattle always made clear) Mudhoney Thrown-ups Beat Happening Steve Fisk Soundgarden (yeah they later sucked, but the Nothing To Say ep killed) Dead Moon Wipers Wolf Eyes Earth Walkabouts Fallouts Fastbacks Nirvana Vaselines Les Thugs Cat Butt (who the label would rather forget, but who were a real kick at the time) Screaming Trees L7 Girl Trouble Godheadsilo The Spinanes Thee Headcoats Low Steven Jesse Bernstein The Album Leaf |

All their songs were about meth, jerking off, and Satan. Really weird.

Yeah, they were on Sub Pop over here. Toured with Sub Pop bands too. They'd almost make my list as they're right on that line between good Spacemen 3ish stonerism and a bit boring. I saw them live in Seattle and they were awesome, but part of the reason was they only got to play for twenty minutes as the club had legally closed and so they really tore it up. |
