how about "none of the above they all suck"?
since that's not an option, i think murray street is BY FAR and EASILY the best of the 3. rain on tin is great. nurse is alright, but some of the parts on some of the songs connect like shit... i'd rather not talk about ripped.. |

Sonic Nurse has some fantastic individual tracks, but it doesn't exactly flow well as an album for me. Murray Street flows cleanly through and through, I even love Plastic Sun.
Rather Ripped is like Experimental Jet Set for me... I listen to a few songs on occasion (mainly Kim's) and that's about it. My vote went to MURRAY STREET. |

also, what kind of criticism is that anyway? i've never understood that -- "have YOU written better songs, CRITIC?" Okay, if I hadn't written better songs, so what? I've HEARD better songs. So, I can justifiably compare these (shitty) songs to (better) songs, right? Or am I not justified simply because I, myself, have not sat down with a composition I wrote and recorded and went, "I DECLARE MY SONGS ARE MUCH BETTER THAN THIS OTHER BAND'S SONGS SO NOW I CAN JUSTIFIABLY SAY THAT THAT OTHER BAND'S SONGS SUCK"?
That makes absolutely no sense. Why say anything about anything? Why have an opinion? "My opinion about the government is..." WELL, HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE GOVERNMENT BEFORE? "See, I kinda liked the film, but I thought the..." WHOA BUDDY!!! HAVE YOU MADE A FILM BEFORE? I DON'T THINK SO! "That book kinda dragged in the middle..." HEY!!!!! YOU! YOU'VE NEVER WRITTEN A BOOK! YOU'RE TOO BUSY ON THE SONIC YOUTH FORUM!!!! See what I'm saying? Why be "critical" of anything if you use that logic? Retarded. |

now that i'm thinking about it some more...
murray street doesn't thrill me like it did, but it was 2nd sonic youth album i ever heard. i got an early pre-release version of it from kazaa, and before that the only album i'd heard was (the amazing) confusion is sex and the song bull in the heather.... so, of course, it shocked me that they could make this music like they did, 20 years later, completely different, but still make it compelling. so, yeah, it hooked me on sy, and i proceeeded to get everything they owned... that being said, i think it's just full of good songs. just straight-up, you know, good tracks. none, besides rain on tin, are just AMAZING, but they're all just good. delicate, pretty, defeated, but... contemplative. i think it sets a consistent, interesting mood, and i dig how there are only two kim tracks (and they're at the end). haha. but she puts in a good performance. i really like the organ or whatever that is in sympathy... but yeah. nurse i was pretty keen on when it came out. but it feels a bit disconnected now that i listen to it again. kinda silly album, really. and rather ripped just sucks. |

Sonic Nurse is underrated.
The structures in the songs are amazing, I mean they really thought this album through it was not like they were saying:" Hey grab a Jazzmaster and let's make these Marshalls explode!" No, the songs are catchy and yet filled with noise. For example the solo part in Patter Recognition is fucked up beyond all recognition! I love you Golden Blue is a masterpiece and I noticed it the first time I heared the song. That song contains some off the nicest riffs I've ever heared... Bottomline is I love this album, it's also the second album I've ever bought which probably has an influence on the choice I made but that still doesn't take away the fact that Sonic Nurse ROCKS! Phew, I'm glad I got that out of my system.

Karenology is vastly superior to Paper Cup Exit... that alone helped me make my decision!
