I listened to the self-titled album a few times last night for the first time. I have to say, it is pretty great, even though the sound is not that focused or far from perfected.
guess my favourite Lightning Bolt albums would go: 1. Wonderful Rainbow 2. Lightning Bolt 3. Ride The Skies 4. Hypermagic Mountain |

I like them okay. I only have WR and HM. HM is cool because the 4th side is artwork etched in a blank side of vinyl.

I voted for "Ride The Skies". Lightning Bolt are one of my fave live acts, full stop. They're coming back to the UK in October - hooray.

ok i'd appreciate a little detail here on how hypermagic mountain and wonderful rainbow differ since they seem to polarise opinion so intriguingly.

hypermagic is intense the whole way through and features lots of parts and more insane drumming/riffing. Also, the production is really.. um... acquired. Haha. Features a good stretch of just amazing songs; in fact I'd say almost every song on this album is a classic.
Wonderful Rainbow is a better sounding album that doesn't seem to hit you over the head as much, though the first few songs are all quite good, including "2 Towers" which is mostly one riff played for 7 minutes. Really awesome song and it definitely captures what makes Lightning Bolt so special. The last 4 or so songs on the album, however, feel really sluggish and mundane and don't hold the momentum, power, or intelligence of the rest of their work.. at least to me. If you ever hear someone pick their favorite song from the album, it's usually one of the first 5, so I think people agree to an extent. |

hypermagic mountain has a bit more melodies and changes in the songs while wonderful rainbow is more repetitive.
dead cowboy is their best song IMO.

Dead Cowboy is insane and the lyrics are hilarious for anyone who has bothered to look them up.

Take George Bush to Afghanistan
He's gonna bathe in a river of blood He wants to party till the wheels fall off Six feet under ground What the world needs Is another dead cowboy Take George Bush to Afghanistan Throw him in an oil pit, six feet deep, six feet wide We're gonna cook him till his ears fall off What the world needs Is another dead cowboy ..... Pretty funny but intentionally dumb too. |
