Because it LOOKS COOLER.

I think a more valid question (for the moment) would be: why are some people returning to cassettes right now? Do people want to be retrograde and self-limiting when they release something? Even as a limited edition tour thing or whatever, I don't really see the point of it. It seems like you'd be better off putting out a crappy CD-R or, preferably, a 7".

A good point, I recently replaced my entire cassette tape collection with CD or vinyl copies, as I ended up having no clue at all why I bought them in the first place.

People think vinyl sounds "better" or "warmer" because of the surface noise created by the needle meeting the record. When the CD came out in the 80's vinyl might have contained better quality audio but not anymore. In fact you can master CD's with more low end than vinyl because overloading low end on vinyl makes the needle skip.

The debate is almost over at this point. Digital is the future.

i thought you were studio trained, it isn't the surface noise, infact all of this noise is above 800hz... hmmm

edit: also putting more low ie 120hz down in cd masters can also create excess cone excursion at loud volumes in a good percentage of domestic speakers which can lead to speaker damage and outright destruction of the voice coil

the debate is not almost over, digital may very well be future but it is still along way off from the depth in frequency harmonics that analogue provides...

vinyl records are engaging objects, and sometimes a better canvas, depending on the visual/material message an musician might want to convey.
i think there's space for all formats.
sure digital formats are much more practical to access music per se, but sometimes there's much more to music than just the music.

as a sonic youth fan you should know this.

Terminal Pharmacy said this better than I ever could.
If you have a good system, the difference is obvious.
If you don't care about "sound" or "art objects," go ahead and listen to sizzly compressed files, but don't cry about it when they all go away at once when your device fails.

This reminds me of another point I was going to say. I remember reading an article about how difficult it was to re-master Metal Machine Music. I also read something about Whitehouse having difficulties mastering some records and having to make the grooves wider, sacrificing length on LPs, simply because vinyl is a physical reproduction. I'm sure vinyl mastering has changed in the last n years, but I wonder if the difference between noise music in the 80s, 90s and 00s is not so much down to the technology but the mode of reproduction. The obvious answer is both and more, but I think mp3s definitely offer a more 'ideal' reproduction for noise artists today.

I only mention noise because I think a lot of the notion of 'perfect tone reproduction' etc is inverse in that scene, similarly to the preference for tapes in no-fi/ shitgaze (etc). So all I'm saying, again, is that there are some genres that rely upon a format - I think a lot of Grime relies upon it being played either in cars or on mobile phones, for instance.

this is one of the best pages of any thread on this site in ages.

I just ruined it, though, with this comment.

nostalgia
i like the different colours
i like the larger format, they're like art
a lot of recordings aren't available on other formats, particularly songs found on 7" records, bsides etc
collecting records gives me something to do
plus the fact that the music isn't compressed to hell is a bonus

the #1 reason...i don't own a cd player.

I do think vinyl sounds better for most things, especially with old rock and jazz records, and some hip-hop, but if I'm completely honest that's not really why I'll always prefer vinyl. I prefer vinyl because you can fucking feel it. The experience of digging out a nicely produced vinyl album, opening the gatefold, reading the inserts ETC, and just the pure tactile experience of holding the thing in yout hands and putting it on the turntable ,make vinyl just an entirely different deal to CDs. I still buy majority CDs for financial reasons and issues of availability, but all things being equal, vinyl is my heart. Sometimes I get literally annoyed with how... lifeless CDs are; these little tacky plastic objects; such that I just can't listen to anything but vinyl for short periods. I'm not some high-horse purist about it, the music is ultimately the most important thing, but damn if vinyl isn't nicer in some many ways...
