Big Doe Rebah is horrible. I think it's probably his worst album.... YES I think Wizard Of Poetry is better. It's at least a far more interesting and ballsy record.
Ironman 4/5 Supreme Clientele 5/5 Bulletproff Wallets 3/5 The Pretty Toney Album 5/5 718 (Theodore Unit) 4/5 Put It On The Line (with Trife Da God) 3/5 Live In NYC - 3/5 Fishscale 4/5 More Fish 3/5 Hidden Darts Special Edition 3/5 Big Doe Rehab 2/5 Wallabee Champ 2/5 Ghostdini The Great 3/5 Ghostdini The Wizard Of Poetry 3/5 Wu-Massacre (with Method Man & Raekwon) 3/5 ....from memory, did I miss any?

I've only heard ironman and I love it. I'm still not sure why people only ever mention OB4CL and LS as the best of the first era of the Wu. Believe it or not, I like Ironman better than cuban linx. Liquid Swords tops them both though.

I'm not as big on cuban Linx, because I'm not as big on Raekwon. But Ghost is only like 13 of the songs, so it's almost a Ghost/Rae album really.

I'm realy not a big Rae fan either. But he's only an actor in the film Cuban Linx that RZA directed. Ya dig?

adam, I've said many times my favorite GFK album is PRETTY TONEY... I'm curious yr take on it... I think it's by far is most OUT THERE album, but most ppl don't seem to pick up on it. It's sort of the album that got me BACK into major label hip hop. The fact that he released THIS on a major is amazing. It saturated Used Bins so quickly aftter release, I knew something was speical about it. It's so fuckign weird, it's great. From the intro and throughout. Thoughts? (After serious listen, please)

I never really listened to it, will have to get it. That, Bulletproof, and Ghostdini are the only ones I've never heard.

Yr post brought something up that I've always thought about. Is RZA solely responsible for nearly everything from the WU from the first five years? I mean, he did have complete control. I guess what I'm trying to say is how much did each member contribute to their respective solo record during RZA's five-year plan? Obviously, they wrote their shit but RZA could have given them a direction or outline given that he was the executive producer. |

the first run of solo albums were not recorded as solo albums. RZA made beats, then everyone had a chance on them, and then he picked the best verses and decided "okay this is GZA's song now" or "this is going on Ghost's album." That's why the first batch of solo's is really very much posse albums that are just sort of heavily-featuring one member (or 3 in the case of IRONMAN...).
(ya'lls need to read RZA's Wu-Tang Manual -- it's a great book.)

I've been meaning to get that book.
Yr explanation makes a lot of sense but it doesn't explain how the production during the first run of solo records fit so well. Each record had a "sound" if you know what I mean. Furthermore, that sound seemed to fit each emcee's style so well. Maybe Rza changed the beats slightly so they all sounded cohesive. Or maybe it was all coincidental. |

yeh I get what yr saying. There may have been SOME tracks that he had in mind for a certain MC (I can't imagine that "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" was made for anyone other than ODB for instance). But there's defiinitely some tracks that could have been on any of their albums... another thing is that perhaps how he decided WHO got the track for their album had to do with the ultimate tone of it. Like maybe he said "okay, well "Meth Vs Chef" could be on Meth's or Rae's album. But its' way heavier than the other tracks I've given to Rae. So it would fit with the headbanger shit I gave Meth:" You think?
