I've never been a Radiohead fan but picked up In Rainbows for 5 bucks when Circuit City was liquidating, based on the fact that it was hailed as The Second Coming. I still haven't made it through the entire thing... dull, dull, dull

As for Cat Power, I was totally expecting to hate/be bored with Marshall's new direction, but I love her newer stuff. She's even weirder now than she was before. The Greatest surpasses the (somewhat tiring) You Are Free album, imo.

Jukebox is an odd collection of covers that are all over the place, but in a good way. The 6-song EP that was released afterward (and is made up of left-overs from Jukebox) has two great songs on it and 4 lazy inoffensive dirges. The EP is, imo, the weakest thing she's ever put out... but that was sort of to be expected considering it's a collection of rejects from a previous album.

I'm really looking forward to her next one, since it's supposed to have newly recorded studio versions of some great live songs (one in particular being Leopard and Lamb from the Moon Pix tour).

I totally agree with you. For some reason I buy every new release while crossing my fingers, but they always suck. I should just give up at that band.

The whole Spiritualized things bums me out so hard. There was a time when their new record was like some kind of shining beacon on the horizon and you knew it would illuminate your world for many months of heavy rotation. Plus they were easily one of the best live bands on earth for the first half of their existence. Now they're either overproduced or boring or both.
I was with them from the start (and before), but I stopped caring a long time ago. Flipping that switch to "off" really made me sad, but not as sad as listening to new albums had for years.

Go and see Spectrum/Sonic Boom if you get the chance. I was expecting it to possibly be totally junk plus I'm not even much of a Spaceman 3 fan but they were totally great.

Anyway, back on topic, I submit for your consideration:
Tangerine Dream - First four lps are pretty good to great. Electronic Meditation is amazing, Zeit is monolithic and Alpha Centauri and Atem are pretty good. Amazing how rapidly shit they got.

Black Sabbath - First two records are ace, Master of Reality is decent and then after Vol 4, which is ok, they go shit.

Sonic Boom has definitely taken over as the one Who Is Still Good.
Strangely, the Spectrum show I saw early on was pretty bad, but his performances have only gotten more interesting with time.

Tangerine Dream are one of the best examples for this thread that I can think of. Good one.

Agree about SPK - luckily I got to see them just before they turned to shit.

Disagree about TG - I've yet to hear a TG track that doesn't have some merit.

Agree about Spiritualized - Spectrum have turned out to be the more credible of the two halves of Spacemen 3

Placebo!!!
Their two first records are really great and then o my...
just checked their latest track. It's so annoyingly shitty!!
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck
now just for the laughs, listen to this flurry of uncontrolled overdubbed studio pro tools arrangements, it's plain horrible. This last minute is unbearable.

Yeah, Tangerine Dream's downfall is really tragic. I used to like everything they've done up to Tangram, but now I think I draw the line at Encore. Their 80's material is absolutely boring new age shit. I haven't bothered with anything by them after that.

I'm not sure if you want to make it through it.
I like 'Videotape' though.

So many people pass off In Rainbows straight away as being boring. I recommend you keep listening and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The only radiohead albums I give a shit about anymore are still ok computer, amnesiac, and actually, in rainbows. I find in rainbows less boring than kid a. It's just energetic in a quiet way, if that makes sense.

But im still not going ape shit over any of it. Not like when I was 15.

speaking about music you really liked at that age and regarding this thread....

I'll say it.

Weezer.

Their first two albums were pop rock masterpieces, while mostly straightfoward, you know the age group that music is targeted at, and for that age group they nailed it flawlessley in my opinion.

The blue album has some of the most awesome hooks and basslines in 90s pop and pinkerton has some of the best/melodic guitar solos that sound more like violin lines than a rock solo.

then the bassist left, rivers went nuts and lost whatever he had going on when he let critics get to his head...and abandoned that style forever, trading it in with his soul.

Ruining what could have been a good legacy and transforming it to a legacy of 'meh'.

Not quite amazing band in the first place and a bit of an obscure one but Hungarian prog/psych band Neoton put out one pretty decent record before turning into Neoton Familia, Hungarys answer to Abba.

Check them:
